So much for reigning in Barack Obama’s runaway administration. Two weeks ago, we wrote about Congress’ “Advice and Consent” power — the power to confirm and deny presidential nominations through Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution. Currently, the Obama administration is running on a skeleton crew, with many seats vacant. This makes it tough for the administration to operate well. Also, any judicial appointments Obama recommends will hold his socialistic views. So this is a critical time for Congress to stop Obama’s views on government from influencing America’s political process for generations to come. But on Wednesday, the Republican-controlled Senate voted 84-2 to confirm John Michael Vazquez as a U.S. district judge in New Jersey. It was the third time this year the Senate signed off on an Obama judge. Don’t the senators know what’s at stake? Deputy Director of government relations for Heritage Action for America William Wolfe told The Daily Signal, “Our system of government requires each branch to jealously guard its prerogatives, and President Obama routinely tramples over the legislature’s prerogatives. Senators should not stand by idly for the next 12 months. They must act to reassert their constitutional prerogatives.” While Republicans debate more of Obama’s appointments, they should remember the “Thurmond Rule,” and informal rule in the upper chamber that forbids the body from approving any judges nominated by a lame-duck president in the last six months of his term. In Obama’s case, they should extend the time up to a year.
