This coming from the New York Times of all places: leftist economists examining Bernie Sanders’ policy platforms find the socialist’s spending aspirations a bit too big to swallow. They called the socialist’s plans “wishful thinking,” and “puppies and rainbows.” On his campaign website, Sanders said his policy proposals would cost a whopping $18 trillion over the next 10 years. The economists — and we repeat, they are leftists with no ties to the Clinton campaign — said implementing Sanders’ dreams would actually cost more like $30 trillion by 2026. “In other words, progressive Dems who mock the big price tag of GOP tax plans need to come to grips with the fantastical elements of Bernie-onomics,” wrote American Enterprise Institute’s James Pethokoukis. “So $30 trillion in new taxes to pay for the new spending, yes? Any idea how that would affect US economic growth? Sure seems like it might.” It’s a good time to mention that Sanders’ own home state, Vermont, arguably the most leftist state in the union, tried to implement single-payer health care.
