It’s not called the nanny state for nothing. In yet another example of how the Obama administration circumvents the will of Congress with wasteful spending, Barack Obama diverted $10 million to create a program that would help low-income Americans buy diapers. Diapers are unarguably a big ticket item for a growing family. About a third of American familes struggle to cover their babies’ behinds, wrote Cecilia Muñoz, Obama’s assistant. “When you have a baby, diapers are a necessity. They are not optional,” she wrote. “Addressing the high cost of diapers for low-income families can help to take one more burden off those families as they strive to reach the middle class, and give the next generation the great start in life that all kids deserve.”

The problem with Obama’s executive action is that Congress tried twice to make diaper distribution a government-given right, and it failed both times. We’ve accused him before of leading from behind, but this is ridiculous.

As the Gipper once said: “Government is like a baby: an alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.”

Obama, with a sweep of his hand, expanded the scope of government with no sense of responsibility as to what it means. Congress is the entity to address the problem. In the meantime, the Obama administration highlighted a need that an enterprising, public-spirited group of citizens could solve, either through a church group, or another nonprofit. Instead, he’s plunging ahead with growing government.
