Even while the IRS complains that a reduced budget leaves it unable to pursue cases of identity theft and fraud, from 2005-2014 it spent $11 million dollars outfitting over 2,000 agents with firearms and tactical gear. And it’s not alone. Agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration have tactical branches to their operation. And it’s grown. While the Obama administration sequestered the U.S. military and only 182,000 U.S. Marines are in the service, the number of feds authorized to carry guns and make arrests now number about 200,000. Put another way, the Obama administration has more G-men policing the American people than members of the quick reaction force designed to keep America safe.

For anyone who cares about limited government, this should cause concern. The IRS harassed conservative nonprofit groups ahead of the 2012 election and it has yet to face justice for that corruption. From 2005 to 2014, the U.S. government spent $1.48 billion arming 67 agencies not under the Department of Defense.

At least one Congressman has sought to disarm those bureaucracies. Last month, U.S. Rep. George Holding (R-NC) introduced a bill that would confiscate the IRS’ guns and badges and instead establish a law enforcement agency under the larger U.S. Treasury Department. “They shouldn’t be entrusted with a law enforcement agency within them,” Holding told McClatchy. “This is the first substantive step toward dismantling the IRS.”

If Barack Obama is so anti-gun, then he should first look to reform his own agencies. For leftists, not only will the number of “scary” guns be reduced, but government will become smaller — a win for left and Right. But what are the chances that Obama would disarm the agency that helped him win in 2012?
