Police arrested Michael Steven Sandford, 20, at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas Saturday after he tried to grab a police officers gun to assassinate the presidential candidate. The day before, Sanford went to a Las Vegas shooting range and fired 20 bullets from a Glock 9mm. He told law enforcement that is how he learned to use a gun. His plan was to grab an officer’s firearm, kill the GOP nominee and die in the act. So much for gun free zones. Fortunately, law enforcement subdued Sandford before he could get his grimy paws on a firearm.

If the ratings caused by 24/7 coverage of Trump is crack to journalists, why was this story not the sole focus of the big network’s Sunday, Monday and Tuesday Trump-churn? In fact, the media was strangely quiet. It’s because this story plays into Trump’s narrative. Sandford was an illegal immigrant. The British man who overstayed his visa had plotted the murder for a year.

Commentator Jim Geraghty notes this story “illuminates the disconcerting fact that once legal temporary immigrants enter the country, the authorities have no real way to keep track of them. And a lot of them take advantage of that fact.” It’s a problem that won’t be solved by building a gilded southern wall, but ignoring the story does not help the discussion surrounding Trump and immigration either.
