Yet another iconic moment at the Rio Olympics, this time when track and field athlete Sam Kendricks, a U.S. Army reservist, is headed for the pole vault at a dead sprint. When he heard the national anthem, he stopped, dropped his pole, and stood at attention for the remainder of the anthem. He went on to win bronze in the event. “I am certainly looking to represent the Americans on two fronts, as a military man and as a U.S. athlete,” Kendricks said later. “I’m just trying to put my best foot forward for all those soldiers who are watching.”
