“October surprises,” as they have been termed, are a last ditch effort to throw out a shocking story intended to derail an opponent’s campaign, and they have become regular political theater. As this political season has been unlike any other in recent memory, with both candidates polling with very negative favorability ratings, one would be wise to buckle up for what might prove to be quite a sling fest of political “gotchas.”

The New York Times got the ball rolling on Saturday with its reveal of Donald Trump’s 1995 tax records under the juicy headline, “Donald Trump Tax Records Show He Could Have Avoided Taxes for Nearly Two Decades.” This story may have been an attempt to pre-empt the promised release of presumably damning documents on Hillary Clinton by WikiLeaks. Interestingly, however, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange announced that an anticipated Tuesday document leak would be postponed due to “security concerns,” though he may reveal something via video. Speculation has swirled as to what these “security concerns” could be — after all, people who cross the Clintons do have a habit of turning up dead.

Assange continues to be holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, which has protected him from extradition demands made by Sweden over a rape charge that he claims is a dubious attempt to silence his organization. In any case, Assange is no altruistic citizen. It is yet unknown how damaging the information on Clinton might be. However, Assange and WikiLeaks deal in hacked information from nefarious sources, and conservatives should not be cheering this man and his organization — even if it’s at the expense of Hillary Clinton.
