Donald Trump’s choice for chair of the Republican National Committee is Ronna Romney McDaniel, the niece of Mitt Romney. Some have speculated that this choice may be a way of Trump burying the hatchet with Romney. But it’s more likely that this choice reflects Trump’s trust in his new chief of staff and outgoing RNC chief Reince Priebus, as McDaniel is part of the successful national GOP network he put together. One thing is clear with this pick: Trump honors loyalty. In announcing McDaniel’s nomination, he stated, “Ronna has been extremely loyal to our movement. Her efforts were critical to our tremendous victory in Michigan, and I know she will bring the same passion to the Republican National Committee.”

She was indeed a loyal supporter after Trump won the Michigan primary, sticking with him even after her uncle publicly rebuked Trump, calling him a con-man and a fraud. When questioned about it, Ronna stated that the two of them had agreed to disagree — and it was Mitt who would ultimately eat crow.

McDaniel will still need to be voted on by the committee members, but that has historically been a mere formality after being chosen by a president-elect. She’s a relative newcomer to the political scene but has risen quickly within the ranks. She became Michigan’s GOP party chair in 2015, and a year later was instrumental in mobilizing the state’s vote for Trump, helping a Republican candidate win Michigan for the first time since 1988. She will be tasked with keeping and building upon what Priebus created.
