The prevailing narrative among the Leftmedia and congressional Democrats goes something like this: President Donald Trump’s moratorium on foreigners venturing into the U.S. isn’t just hurtful, antagonistic and nativist, it’s also widely hated among the American electorate. You’d certainly be forgiven for thinking it is based solely on the way the media is covering the myriad protests and emotional theatrics. But the reality is that more Americans approve of the proscription than don’t, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The Washington Examiner reports: “The Jan. 30-31 poll concluded that 49 percent of adults ‘strongly’ or ‘somewhat’ agree with the Trump administration’s action. A total 41 percent ‘strongly’ or ‘somewhat’ disagreed with the White House’s move. Ten percent said they are undecided on the Jan. 27 announcement.” Perhaps the most surprising part is that only 53% of leftists “strongly disagree.” Given the rhetoric and what’s at stake, you’d think that number would be higher.

Still, that’s not stopping the media from downplaying the results. The Examiner adds, “Thirty-one percent of all respondents said they feel ‘more safe’ with the ban in effect, but 26 percent feel ‘less safe’ as a result of the executive order.” And that’s what Reuters chose to focus on, as seen in this headline: “A third of Americans think Trump’s travel ban will make them safer.” This is a form of pollaganda — making it appear to readers that the ban is less supported than it really is. But the fact of the matter is that the ban has far higher support than what leftists expect or even want.

It’s also worth noting that a recent Rasmussen poll found even stronger support. However, as Hot Air’s Allahpundit notes, it’s findings were derived before the actual signing and before the Left’s theatrical outburst. “Result: Nothing worse than a modest decline in public support for Trump’s position, and it’s still net favorable on balance. I’d be pretty happy with that result if I were on Team Trump.”
