Debbie Wasserman Schultz just can’t catch a break. She fired an information technology (IT) employee this week after his arrest at Dulles International Airport as he was trying to leave the country. The backstory: Earlier this year, it was discovered that four IT employees — brothers Abid, Imran and Jamal Awan, and Imran’s wife Hina — were accused of unauthorized access of congressional computers. In other words, they were hacking, and they would likely have had access to sensitive intelligence information. The group has made over $4 million dollars doing IT work for Democrats since 2009 — in part by allegedly double billing for equipment and services — but were fired in the wake of the initial story. Well, except for Imran Awan, who was for some reason still employed by Wasserman Schultz until yesterday. Recall she lost her DNC job after last year’s infamous hack of emails.

That’s not all. The New York Daily News reports, “Awan and his wife, Hina Alvi, were accused of lying about a housing equity loan to pilfer $165,000 from the Congressional Federal Credit Union, according to documents filed in the District of Columbia. The couple obtained the loan for a rental property — rather than a primary residence. That money was then wired to Pakistan, documents allege.” Alvi up and left the country for Pakistan in March, and it appears Awan was ready to do the same.

The FBI seized smashed hard drives from their home, and Wasserman Schultz seems particularly worried about the contents on those hard drives. In May, she threatened “consequences” if her equipment was not returned by the Capitol Police. “Under my understanding the Capitol Police is not able to confiscate members’ equipment when the member is not under investigation. It is their equipment and it’s supposed to be returned,” she said. “I think you’re violating the rules when you conduct your business that way and should expect that there would be consequences.”

There may be nothing more here, or there may be a lot more. Fox News reports, “Awan is of Pakistani descent, and Democratic sources have argued the family’s ethnicity is a factor in the attention they’re receiving.” That’s doubtful, although the fact that they’re Muslim may have played into the Democrats’ diversity hire.
