Dems Call on DNC to Return Weinstein Donations

But the DNC’s pitiful fundraising — as opposed to the RNC’s record haul — has the leadership second-guessing.

Democrat Party leadership remains resistant to calls from within its own ranks to return the money donated by disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. As the Republican National Committee reports, “To date, the Democrat National Committee (DNC) has refused to give up the Weinstein donations, only shuffling a small fraction of the dirty Weinstein cash to other Democratic groups.” This despite the DNC’s facing pressure from Democrat lawmakers. The Clinton Foundation has also scoffed at returning Weinstein donations.

So what’s the problem? Actually, we have a pretty good idea about the DNC’s apprehension — the organization is (badly) losing the fundraising race against its competition and has little money to spare. This week The Washington Free Beacon reported:

The Republican National Committee broke a fundraising record and raised more than $100 million during the first nine months of 2017, fueled by small-dollar donors at the center of a grassroots movement. … The accomplishment marked the first time the RNC raised that amount, that fast, in a non-presidential election year. September’s $10.4 million give the RNC $44.1 million in the bank with a total of $104.4 million raised this year. Across the aisle, the Democratic National Committee had raised $46.3 million by the end of August with $6.8 million cash on hand. The DNC had not released September’s fundraising numbers prior to the Friday deadline for Federal Election Commission filings.

Don’t expect the DNC’s September figures to blow anyone out of the water either. After all, the organization has struggled all year to raise money. In August, Politico underscored the problem with the headline, “The Democratic Party’s Looming Fundraising Crisis.” The Washington Post piled on, “The DNC’s money woes persist.” It appears the anti-Trump resistance movement is failing to bear fruit. Bigly. Simply put, it’s not politically expedient for the DNC to let go of what precious little money it has.

On a final note, instead of giving the money back to Weinstein — who clearly doesn’t deserve it — perhaps every Democrat should donate that money to a worthy charity instead.
