President Donald Trump moved this week to protect the religious rights of health care workers, an issue he had campaigned on. On Thursday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that it was setting up a new division tasked with enforcing laws that protect health care workers rights to “conscience and religious freedom.” The director of the HHS civil rights office, Roger Severino stated, “No one should be forced to choose between helping sick people and living by one’s deepest moral or religious convictions, and the new division will help guarantee that victims of unlawful discrimination find justice.”

Predictably, several leftist organizations objected to the administration’s commitment to protect Americans’ religious freedoms and right of conscience. Conflating the issue of health care workers’ rights with promoting discrimination against the “LGBT community,” Sarah Warbelow, legal director of the Human Rights Campaign, stated, “The creation of an unnecessary new division that is likely to promote a license to discriminate diverts needed enforcement resources and encourages discrimination against LGBTQ people. Every American deserves access to quality health care, and that should not be determined by the personal opinions of individual medical providers or administrative staff.”

For a long time now the Left has been conflating health care with elective non-essential medical procedures such as abortion, which always kills a human being. They are attempting the same slight of hand with regards to gender reassignment “care.” By wrapping a controversial issue up in the guise of “health care,” they seek to force cultural acceptance and individual compliance to issues many view as immoral and unethical.

The formation of this new division is indeed welcome news.
