On Saturday, President Donald Trump responded to news that a letter his lawyers had sent to Special Counsel Robert Mueller in January arguing against the need for Trump to be interviewed had been leaked to the press. Trump wrote, “There was No Collusion with Russia (except by the Democrats). When will this very expensive Witch Hunt Hoax ever end? So bad for our Country. Is the Special Counsel/Justice Department leaking my lawyers letters to the Fake News Media? Should be looking at Dems corruption instead?”

Much of the mainstream media’s reaction to the leaked letter has focused on the administration’s defense against a possible obstruction of justice charge. The letter argues that Trump’s presidential authority over the Justice Department gives him the constitutional right “if he wished, [to] terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon.” Trump’s lawyers clearly had little concern over any Russian collusion and were focused upon heading off any attempt at an obstruction of justice charge. It is also apparent, as we have long argued, that no credible evidence has been presented to support the charge of obstruction, and the letter does a good job in making this case.

Trump and much of the American public want to see Mueller’s investigation concluded sooner rather than later. The longer this probe drags on without any substantive findings, the more public opinion has turned in Trump’s favor. While Democrats’ leftist base predictably maintains strong support for continuing the investigation, Democrat midterm candidates themselves have for the most part steered clear of the issue in their campaigns. That’s because they need independent voters to win, not just a rabid base.

Democrats are now stuck in a bit of hard spot with this issue come November. Arguing for the continuation of an investigation that has turned up nothing on Trump still plays well with its base, but it risks alienating independents who, like the rest of America, are seeing a booming economy thanks in large part to the work of Trump and Republican tax cuts.
