This is what happens when one becomes so consumed by Trump Derangement Syndrome that concern for the welfare of one’s fellow citizens and the country at large are effectively sacrificed to satisfy one’s leftist vitriol. One of the nation’s proudest anti-Trumpers, Bill Maher, opened his HBO show Friday with a monologue lamenting the state of America. Maher opined, “I don’t know if we’re a western democracy anymore.” He then suggested that Donald Trump’s presidency is a “slow-moving coup.” But he was just getting wound up.

Later in the show, which features a panel discussion, Maher responded to the undeniable fact that under Trump the U.S. economy is doing extremely well. Maher remarked, “I feel like the bottom has to fall out [of the economy] at some point, and by the way, I’m hoping for it.” And then Maher doubled down, saying, “I think one way you get rid of Trump is a crashing economy. So, please, bring on the recession. Sorry if that hurts people, but it’s either root for a recession or you lose your democracy.”

So in Maher’s world, the U.S. — which to be accurate is not a democracy but a constitutional republic — cannot be considered as a win for democracy if leftists aren’t running the country. Maher is no more in favor of democracy than was Fidel Castro. These are the sentiments of elitists who believe their vision for the nation and world at large to be the only correct view.

Secondly, Maher would rather see his fellow Americans suffer great economic loss, much like the eight years under Barack Obama, so long as it advances his leftist ideology. Ironically, of course, Maher’s arrogant elitist attitude epitomizes the reason why so many Americans voted for Trump. They were and are sick of self-righteous leftist and their condescending views toward Americans’ individual rights and Liberty. Clearly Maher believes Americans are too stupid to vote for the individual they see best fit to lead the nation. And he hopes they pay for it.
