The CEO of Levi Strauss, Chip Bergh, published an announcement this week in Fortune, writing that his company “simply cannot stand by silently when it comes to issues that threaten the very fabric of the communities where we live and work.” He wasn’t speaking of the growing threats posed by violent leftists to Americans’ constitutional freedoms. No, Bergh is himself a leftist. The issue at hand for Bergh is the Second Amendment, and while he claimed to not be working against it, his actions demonstrate just the opposite.

Bergh announced that Levi Strauss has partnered with the anti-gun activist group Everytown for Gun Safety to lobby for “common sense” gun-control measures, and the company will be donating over $1 million over the next four years to various anti-gun activist groups. Bergh also sought to explain why his company, which has no involvement whatsoever in the firearm industry, would seek to actively engage in such a controversial issue. The simple answer: leftist virtue signaling. Bergh writes, “You may wonder why a company that doesn’t manufacture or sell guns is wading into this issue, but for us, it’s simple. Americans shouldn’t have to live in fear of gun violence. It’s an issue that affects all of us — all generations and all walks of life.” Meanwhile, Americans continue to live in fear of self-righteous know-it-all leftists seeking to violate their constitutionally protected rights in the name of “saving lives.”

It is evident that Bergh has no interest in actually educating himself on the data and statistics, let alone the fundamental reason for why the Second Amendment protection exists in the first place. No, he’d rather trumpet the same demonstrably false demagoguery of the anti-gun lobby while concealing it in the language of compassion.

Corporate gun control is the hot new thing. But as with Nike already this week, it will be interesting to see if Levi Strauss takes a financial hit for this bald-faced leftist move.
