Cesar Sayoc Jr., 56, of Florida (and North Carolina, New Jersey, Michigan, and Brooklyn, New York) was arrested Friday morning as the prime suspect who sent what Mark Alexander noted Wednesday were likely inert mail bomb packages to 12 Democrat notables. Here’s what we know so far:

He is a registered Republican, but he’s allegedly changed his political affiliations more than once. His van was plastered with pro-Trump stickers, but his social media pages indicate he was just a lunatic.

He has a lengthy prior arrest record, including for making terroristic bomb threats, and that record dates back to 1991.

All of the devices — more than a dozen so far — appear to have been faulty. None actually detonated, and the ones authorities have commented on could not have exploded. On Friday afternoon, FBI Director Christopher Wray stated, “Though we’re still analyzing the devices in our laboratory, these are not hoax devices.”

According to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, “[Sayoc] is being charged today with five federal crimes, including interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and certain other persons, threatening interstate communications, and assaulting current and former federal officers. For these charges, the defendant faces up to 58 years in prison. These charges may change or expand as the investigation proceeds.”

President Donald Trump responded to the news, saying, “I am pleased to inform you that law enforcement has apprehended the suspect and taken him into custody.” He also strongly asserted, “We must never allow political violence to take root in America. I’m committed to doing everything in my power as president to stop it. But the bottom line is that Americans must unify, and we must show the world that we are united together in peace and love and harmony as fellow American citizens. There is no country like our country, and every day we are showing the world just how truly great we are.”

Sessions echoed this sentiment, stating: “This is utterly unacceptable. Political violence or the threat of violence is antithetical to our vigorous system of self-government.” He also warned, “Let this be a lesson to anyone, regardless of their political beliefs, that we will bring the full force of law against anyone who attempts to use threats, intimidation, and outright violence to further an agenda.”
