Essential Healthcare or Exploiting Women?

The debate over abortion rages as usual, except with a coronavirus twist.

Approximately 3,000 preborn babies die each day in America due to the elective procedure of abortion. Contrast that to the siren sounded at USA Today on April 1 with the headline, “More than 1,000 in US die in a single day from coronavirus, doubling the worst daily death toll of the flu.” Yet abortion has been deemed “essential” by Planned Parenthood and its ilk, who deceptively equate taking a life with “healthcare.”

Got that? Three thousand American babies are aborted daily.

No question the 1,000 who die from coronavirus are victims and their lives are sacred and beautiful. But is a baby any less?

Let’s take just a minute to see this hypocrisy played out within this national pandemic.

In efforts to spare the use of the personal protective equipment (PPE) needed by the healthcare heroes on the front lines of treating those ill with COVID-19, a great deal of elective healthcare has been halted. Treatment has been delayed for patients who need heart procedures, cancer surgeries, or other necessary care that doesn’t meet the definition of urgent or an emergency. Yet abortion is being demanded by the pro-abortion lobby as medically necessary and even an emergency.

For that reason, the ACLU filed suit in Ohio and Iowa. Staff attorney Elizabeth Watson proclaimed, “As leading medical groups have recognized, abortion is essential and time-sensitive health care. We hope the court will recognize the urgency of this matter and grant relief for our clients so that they can continue the vital work of providing care to their communities.” In Alabama, a similar lawsuit was filed with Randall Marshall, the group’s executive director. “Abortion providers take seriously their responsibility to protect the health and safety of their patients, the staff, and their community,” Marshall opined. “But pregnant people need health care whether it’s prenatal care and childbirth services or abortion care. Preventing them from getting an abortion doesn’t do anything to stop the COVID-19 virus, it just takes the decision whether to have a child out of their hands.”

Offering a false premise, of course halting elective abortions does nothing to do with stopping COVID-19. However, it does send PPE in short supply to healthcare workers who need it. And, no! Abortion is not healthcare.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf issued a state directive to close all businesses “that are not life sustaining” with guidance from the state government forbidding elective procedures performed by healthcare services and hospitals. The powerful Planned Parenthood Keystone announced it would continue operations “for abortion services only” but suspend all other healthcare services. At about $950 a life, the abortion mills want their revenue.

On Palm Sunday morning, U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams spoke a very clear, unmistakable warning to prepare Americans for this week ahead. It will be “the hardest and saddest week of most Americans’ lives,” he said while drawing parallels to the loss of life at Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The loss of life from the three attack sites of 9/11 was 2,977. When Japan stunned Americans in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, there were 2,403 who perished in an act of war. But each day, three thousand preborn babies become victims and the lies of the abortion lobby spin constantly to hide these elective acts that end life.

To the governors who have stepped up to protect the lives of healthcare heroes in need of PPE as COVID-19 spreads, as well as the innocent lives of babies dismissed as an inconvenience, thank you.

There is essential healthcare. Abortion will never be healthcare, much less essential. It is, instead, a procedure that exploits and destroys.
