Should Joe Biden be eventually confirmed as the next president of the United States, Americans can expect to see some significant policy changes across the board. One notable area is regarding President Donald Trump’s platform-defining agenda from 2016: illegal immigration. While Biden didn’t spend much time campaigning against Trump over his immigration reforms, the Biden camp recently made it clear that he intends to undo most of Trump’s immigration policies.

Turning back the clock will start with implementing “a 100-day freeze on deportations while his administration issues guidance narrowing who can be arrested by immigration agents,” CBS News reports. Biden also intends to end Trump’s highly successful “Remain in Mexico” refugee policy, presumably returning to Barack Obama’s abysmal “catch and release” practice, which, if anything, only served to encourage the flow of illegals across the border. Furthermore, Biden wants to greatly increase the number of refugees admitted into the U.S. annually up to 125,000. Under Trump, the number was capped at 15,000 refugees a year.

But Scranton Joe won’t stop there. Biden would also lift Trump’s travel ban from certain Muslim-majority countries. Leftists falsely slandered Trump’s executive order as racist, xenophobic, and Islamophobic when in fact it was the Obama administration that had targeted the countries in question as threatening to the U.S. due to lack of effective controls for identifying and preventing terrorists from infiltrating the U.S.

Then there’s the controversial DACA program, the de facto amnesty for the children of illegal immigrants that Obama unconstitutionally originated and Trump was prevented from rescinding due to terrible court rulings. Biden has promised to bring DACA back up to full speed.

Essentially, Biden’s plan amounts to a reopening of the U.S. immigration loopholes that Trump had closed. Clearly, that will reignite the migrant crisis that Trump had effectively gotten under control. Biden’s agenda demonstrates that he’s no moderate on immigration; he’s aligned himself with the hard Left in his party.

However, there may be a factor that will at least slow down some of Biden’s attempt to undo Trump’s immigration policies. As former immigration official Doris Messiner explains, “The Trump administration had an extraordinary preoccupation with immigration issues and they invested an enormous amount of attention and single-minded focus on immigration. An administration that wants to undo those changes would have to devote a similar amount of time and effort — and arguably more, because you don’t want to just be undoing things.”

Politically, it would behoove Biden to talk a big game but not actually do too much to undo Trump’s border-enforcement success. The last thing Biden wants is to create a major campaign issue for Democrats to defend against come 2022.
