Is Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) an honest Democrat? Most Democrats feign fealty to the Constitution in public while completely ignoring it in practice. Not McGovern. During a debate with Republican opponent Marty Lamb this week, McGovern had this to say about campaign-finance reform and the Constitution:

“We have a lousy Supreme Court decision that has opened up the floodgates, and so we have to deal within the realm of constitutionality. And a lot of the campaign finance bills that we have passed have been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. I think the Constitution is wrong. [emphasis added] I don’t think that money is the same thing as human beings. I don’t think money equals free speech. I don’t think corporations should have the same equality as a regular voter in this district.”

When it came time for question and answer, however, McGovern denied ever having made the remark.

So scratch that about an honest Democrat. We’re still looking for one.
