Big Government, Little Freedom
The Biden-Harris administration plans to spend the way to economic growth.
Though every dollar taxpayers lawfully send to the U.S. Treasury is already owed to creditors like China, and though the debt now exceeds the worth of all goods and services in the U.S., the Biden-Harris administration is determined to “transform” the economy through more government spending.
Last month, it was revealed that less than 10% of the $1.9 trillion “COVID relief package” will be spent directly on COVID, and just 1% will be spent on COVID vaccines. On the day Joe Biden was sworn into office, it was estimated that 15.6 million doses of COVID vaccines were administered — without the trillions of faux philanthropy. Today, companies are competing with welfare to get employees to return to work and abandon the supplemental welfare checks from “COVID relief.”
The Biden-Harris administration has now announced an additional $2.25 trillion for “infrastructure” with most spending directed toward “clean” energy and climate control spending. Wyoming Senator John Barrasso, chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, described the proposals as an “out-of-control socialist spending spree.” But in a Pittsburgh speech to a labor union crowd, Biden pitched this bloated spending as the most significant federal jobs investment since World War II.
Sadly, it seems Biden’s memory is again a problem. While serving as President Barack Obama’s VP, he admitted, “There’s no such thing as shovel-ready projects,” because unemployment had stalled at 10% two years after the administration spent almost $1 trillion via the American Recovery Act. Unlike the Bill Clinton-era Democrats who actually tied welfare to work, the reengineered Democrat Party has completely moved to guaranteed government income, “free” healthcare, and “free” college tuition with more reliance on government services rather than personal responsibility and innovation. This evolution in philosophy and ideology is referenced in the Wall Street Journal’s succinct analysis of Biden’s plan: “The administration’s policies are rooted in economic research focused on perceived free-market flaws.”
Ronald Reagan dismantled Big Government spending and control by cutting taxes and regulations to create decades of economic health, ensuring that American hard work could lead to financial freedom. “One thing becoming more clear every day is that freedom and progress go hand in hand,” President Reagan declared. “Throughout the developing world, people are rejecting socialism because they see that it doesn’t empower people, it impoverishes them.”
And as studied and researched by the Mises Institute, “The establishment of government enterprise creates an inherent competitive advantage over private firms, for at least part of its capital was gained by coercion rather than service.”
Last week, Angela Davis, the former Communist Party member who was instrumental in a 1970 armed California courtroom takeover resulting in four murders, was invited to speak to the Head-Royce School, a $47,300-per-year prep school in Oakland. Davis’s directive was right in line with today’s Democrats. “Ultimately, I think we’re going to have to dismantle capitalism if we really want to move in a progressive direction, if we want our children and children’s children and their children to begin to move along a trajectory that is described by freedom,” heralded the 1979 winner of the Soviet Union’s International Lenin Peace Prize. This activist speaker is connected with the Black Panthers and has praised Vladimir Lenin as “glorious” and the Bolshevik Revolution as “great.” She’s just one example of the folks now getting publicity and instilling socialist values in the next generation.
Lady Margaret Thatcher once quipped, “The trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” Reagan was credited to say, “Socialism only works in two places. Heaven, where they don’t need it, and hell, where they already have it.” Conservatives must unify against Big Government because the future of American Liberty is at stake.
