Insight: “Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is the highest political end.” —Lord Acton (1834-1902)

Friendly fire I: “Those whose initial instincts may favor important structural (or other similar institutional) changes, such as forms of ‘court-packing,’ [should] think long and hard before embodying those changes in law.” —Justice Stephen Breyer

Friendly fire II: “It’s shameful and unacceptable for @POTUS to continue the construction of Trump’s xenophobic and racist wall.” —Congresswoman Ilhan Omar

Braying jenny: “Real people on both sides of the aisle want action.” —Kamala Harris asserting only fake people don’t support gun control

D'oh! “Today, I’m proud to nominate David Chipman to serve as the director of the AFT.” —Joe Biden announcing his ATF nominee

The BIG Lie: “As four of the largest food companies and major employers in the United States, we view the growing number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills under consideration in state legislatures, including those that target transgender people and particularly children, with increasing alarm. These bills are bad for families, for communities, for businesses and for the U.S. economy, all still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic. We condemn dangerous, discriminatory legislation that serves as an attack on LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly transgender and nonbinary people. Such laws not only threaten hard-won progress to bring greater awareness, support and equality to transgender Americans, they also threaten the livelihoods and safety of their communities and their families.” —Chris Adamo, Brad Figel, Molly Fogarty, and Tom Langan

Race bait: “What we know is this: racism is a serious public health threat that directly affects the well-being of millions of Americans … [and] as the nation’s leading public health agency, CDC has a critical role to play to address the impact of racism on public health.” —CDC Director Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky

Non compos mentis: “We’re done letting corporations manipulate our culture into believing incremental progress is acceptable action. IF YOU LOVE US, PAY US.” —rapper Sean Combs, who is worth nearly a billion dollars

Non sequitur: “He treated me like George Floyd. He treated me like Emmett Till. No due process. Immediately assumed my guilt.” —Virginia gubernatorial candidate and current Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax complaining that his opponent, Terry McAuliffe (yes, he’s back), assumed he is guilty of multiple sexual assault allegations (The difference between Fairfax and Floyd and Till is that the latter are both dead…)

And last… “Anyone who tries to restrict your legally owned firearms is not trying to make America safer. The point is to disarm you and strip you of your autonomy, your power, your right to self-defense. Gun control is not about guns. Gun control is about who controls America.” —Tucker Carlson
