COVID Doesn’t Excuse Federal Waste

From tax enforcement to spending on job creation, government still isn’t the answer.

American psychologist Abraham Maslow once quipped, “I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.” This philosophy is applied regularly to America’s financial problems by President Joe Biden and President-in-Waiting Kamala Harris as they spend, regulate, and tax more, redistributing wealth and hammering down the hard-working American.

IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig testified before the Senate Finance Committee last week, “As much as $1 trillion a year in federal taxes may be going unpaid because of errors, fraud, and lack of resources to enforce collections adequately.” Seeking an IRS budget increase, his remarks were referencing his agency that features about 6,500 agents mobilized to deal with the most complex cases involving large corporations or the highest income earners.

In 2019, the IRS had “73,554 full-time equivalent positions in conducting its work” and spent $11.8 billion for its operations, while the revenue it collected in 2019 was $3.5 trillion. Oregon’s famed Democrat and Finance Committee Chairman, Senator Ron Wyden, responded to the plea for more funding and the outstanding trillion due to tax cheats: “I thank you for delivering this important wake-up call to this committee about the enormity of the cheating that is taking place in America with respect to taxes.”

What is the remedy to retrieve the needed money for more spending? More spending, of course! The Biden administration is seeking a $1.2 billion increase for the IRS, with $900 million of that to be directed toward compliance. Clearly, Americans must lawfully comply with their tax payments, but we should understand that there will never be enough taxes to feed an engorged government.

The Wall Street Journal’s John McCormick observes, “The U.S. budget deficit grew to a record $1.7 trillion in the first half of the fiscal year as a third round of stimulus payments sent federal spending soaring last month.” Less than 10% of the $1.9 trillion COVID relief plan was used directly for virus aid. When parents are predictably easy, teenagers wise to those weaknesses will make more requests for money and further test the boundaries. When Biden solves every problem with money, more money will be requested from this big-spending, big-government administration.

Biden’s American Jobs Plan to “grow the economy” is best summed up in the president’s mid-March declaration regarding the New Deal and Great Society eras. “This is the first time we’ve been able to, since the Johnson administration and maybe even before that, to begin to change the paradigm,” he said.

Why is it the first time in Biden’s four-decade-plus career to change the economy on such a grand scale? As even HBO’s lefty comedian Bill Maher has exposed, the “panic porn” of the COVID pandemic has permitted outrageous spending, outrageous government control, and outrageous misinformation. “Liberals often mock the Republican misinformation bubble,” Maher said. “But what about liberals, you know, the high-information, behind-the-science people? … If the right-wing media bubble has to own things like climate change denial, shouldn’t liberal media have to answer for, ‘How did your audience wind up believing such a bunch of crap about COVID?’”

Early on, we needed a unified response led by government to mobilize resources for COVID. But, predictably, it wasn’t long before government did little more than waste money and grow its bureaucracies instead of solve problems.

Increasing taxes have been guaranteed with Democrats controlling all aspects of the federal government. Biden’s projected $2 trillion package is slated to created 2.7 million jobs at a “bargain” $666,000 per job. Though The Washington Post and CNN are reporting the same figures, few are pointing out how ludicrous they are.

Remember, when all you’ve got is a hammer, everything is a nail. When you’re a Democrat, every problem is met only with bigger spending, bigger government, and less Liberty.
