It’s hard to know how much damage John Kerry has done to himself or his country and her allies by having snitched on Israel. It’s true, of course, that no one likes a snitch, but no one liked John Kerry even before he snitched.

Still, Kerry isn’t just any dirty rat. No, he’s the haughty, French-looking Massachusetts Democrat who by the way served in Vietnam (hat tip, James Taranto), and he snitched on one of our nation’s most important allies, perhaps while serving as Barack Obama’s secretary of state. And he did so to the world leader in state-sponsored terrorism; to a regime with the blood of hundreds of American servicemen on its hands; to a regime hell-bent on the destruction of Israel; to a regime that routinely leads its people in chants of “Death to America!”

All in a day’s work, we suppose, for the shameless Purple Heart hunter of Vietnam, the guy who once provided aid and comfort to our enemy during a time of war.

What, exactly, did Kerry do? According to Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, Kerry informed him of Israeli military operations in Syria — specifically, according to leaked audiotape, that Israel had attacked Iranian interests in Syria at least 200 times.

National Review’s Jim Geraghty wonders: “Was it official U.S. policy to inform the Iranian government — most certainly not an ally — about the covert military actions of the Israeli government — most certainly an ally? Was this an Obama administration initiative designed to win over the Iranians by spilling the beans on the Israelis, or was this John Kerry freelancing and just blurting out whatever he had been told in his classified briefings?”

It could’ve been any and all of those things, especially given the contempt with which Obama and his administration treated Israel. Kerry, not surprisingly, denies that he snitched at all. “I can tell you that this story and these allegations are unequivocally false,” he harrumphed via Twitter. “This never happened — either when I was Secretary of State or since.”

Biden’s State Department dutifully fell in behind its snitch. “This is purportedly leaked material. Can’t speak to the authenticity. Can’t speak to the accuracy of it. Can’t speak to any motives that may be behind its dissemination,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters Monday. “If you go back and look at press reporting from the time, this certainly was not secret, and governments that were involved were speaking to this publicly on the record.”

Hmm … if all this was common knowledge at the time, then why, according to The New York Times, did Zarif say he reacted to Kerry’s revelation with “astonishment”?

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley isn’t buying it either. “This is disgusting on many levels,” she tweeted. “Biden and Kerry have to answer for why Kerry would be tipping off Iran, the number one sponsor of terror, while stabbing one of our greatest partners, Israel, in the back.”

David Harsanyi of National Review sees Kerry as having crossed a line. He writes, “We know now that former secretary of state John Kerry isn’t merely a critic of Israel; he is an adversary. … [He] feels comfortable sharing this information with an autocratic adversary — a government that’s murdered hundreds of Americans, regularly kidnapped them, interfered with our elections, and propped up a regime that gasses its people — about the covert actions of a long-time American ally.”

Yep. When it comes to John Kerry, “dirty rat” sounds about right. He should’ve been convicted for treason in 1973, which we campaigned to do in 2004. Now, Congress needs to call him as a witness and, if it determines he actually told Iran what is alleged, he needs to be stripped of all security clearances and run out of town.
