James Carville is a political animal. Political campaigns are his bread and butter. For the Louisiana Democrat, politics isn’t about standing on principles but advancing into positions of power. And when it comes to reading the political tea leaves, few are better than Carville. So when he expresses fears that Democrats are headed for disaster in the 2022 elections, ears perk up.

In a recently published interview with Leftmedia outlet Vox, Carville issued a blunt warning to his party. “Wokeness is a problem and everyone knows it,” he said. “It’s hard to talk to anybody today — and I talk to lots of people in the Democrat Party — who doesn’t say this. But they don’t want to say it out loud.” When queried as to why Democrats don’t want talk about “wokeness,” Carville answered, “Because they’ll get clobbered or canceled.” The politics of personal destruction is all fun and games until you’re the target, eh, James?

Now, if one thinks Carville is suggesting that Democrats should just stick a fork in their 2022 chances, then one would be wrong. Carville clearly is seeking to warn the Democrats to work on their public image, not to change their political direction. “Lots of smart people are going to read [this interview], and hopefully they can figure out that which I can’t,” he explained. “But if you’re asking me, I think it’s because large parts of the country view us as an urban, coastal, arrogant party, and a lot gets passed through that filter. That’s a real thing. I don’t give a damn what anyone thinks about it — it’s a real phenomenon, and it’s damaging to the party brand.”

Arguing that messaging is the root of the Democrats’ problem, he observes, “Maybe tweeting that we should abolish the police isn’t the smartest thing to do because almost f—king no one wants to do that. Here’s the deal: No matter how you look at the map, the only way Democrats can hold power is to build on their coalition, and that will have to include more rural white voters from across the country. Democrats are never going to win a majority of these voters. That’s the reality. But the difference between getting beat 80 to 20 and 72 to 28 is all the difference in the world.”

So, what’s Carville’s goal here? As Power Line’s Steven Hayward surmises, “Carville may be trying to be clever or tactical, by creating some artificial daylight between Biden and the insanity gripping his party.” In other words, Carville is attempting to distance Biden from the craziness that is today’s Democrat Party. Will it work? Well, spinning fictions is what the Democrats have been perfecting for decades, yet by his own record, Biden has demonstrated himself to be the most leftist president this nation has ever witnessed. That truth is hard to hide.
