The Patriot Post® · Biden to Struggling Employers: Just Pay More
President Marie-Antoinette says restaurateurs can eat cake. No, the real Marie-Antoinette probably didn’t say that, but Joseph Robinette Biden did say that restaurant owners will “be in a bind for a little while” — and it’s their own fault. But hey, if they make cake, they can eat it.
Biden, who hasn’t had a real job since the 1960s, made his appallingly condescending comments to a business owner in a CNN town hall event. An Ohio restaurateur told the president of his struggles to “find employees” when “hiring is our top priority right now.” He asked, “How do you and the Biden administration plan to incentivize those that haven’t returned to work yet?”
The restaurateur’s implicit point is something we’ve been saying for a long time. The federal government has been incentivizing people not to return to work, and that’s the biggest problem facing potential employers. It’s why there are still nine million unfilled positions. It’s why the restaurant next door to our humble shop is no longer open for lunch — the owner can’t find employees.
Biden’s answer not only didn’t acknowledge this truth, he demanded thanks and credit: “Well, two things. One, if you noticed, we kept you open,” Biden claimed. You’re welcome, you Republican ingrate.
“We spent billions of dollars to make sure restaurants could stay open,” Biden continued. Many didn’t get help and didn’t stay open, thanks to government-mandated shutdowns and, again, thanks to not being able to find workers. But never mind that inconvenient truth.
He then opined on economics: “And a lot of people who now — who worked as waiters and waitresses decided that they don’t want to do that anymore because there’s other opportunities at higher wages, because there’s a lot of openings now in jobs and people are beginning to move.”
And again: “People are looking to make more money and to bargain. And so I think your business and the tourist business is really going to be in a bind for a little while.”
He did, however, admit that his policies really are the problem. “We’re ending all of those things that are things keeping people back from going back to work, et cetera,” he said. “It will be interesting to see what happens.” Yes it will.
Ultimately, though, it’s little more than unmitigated arrogance for an economically illiterate half-century Swamp creature to lecture an employer about what it takes to run a business. Especially when the president’s policies cause hardship.
The truth is even more insidious. The Democrats’ real strategy with enhanced unemployment benefits that are keeping people on the sidelines is to ingrain their $15/hour minimum wage in the economy. What they can’t pass legislatively, they’re forcing through by other means. Think it’s a coincidence that enhanced benefits just happen to add up to $15 an hour? That is indeed forcing employers to raise wages — and prices — to pay for this new cost of finding willing workers.
Biden’s right about one thing — it’s putting businesses in a bind. But he didn’t exactly take a page from Bill Clinton’s playbook and feel anyone’s pain. Biden’s got nothing but callous disregard for life-altering economic malaise.
