The Patriot Post® · Biden, What Did You Expect?
The world seems to be stunned by the total collapse of Afghanistan. As a Marine and Vietnam veteran who has seen many young Marines off to Afghanistan, the betrayal of our Afghan allies hit me hard. But I am not stunned by the malfeasance of Joe Biden.
Several weeks ago, Biden was asked by the media if there was any possibility that Afghanistan could collapse and we’d see a repeat of the fall of Saigon in 1975. Absolutely not, the president replied. Biden then gave several reasons why this wouldn’t happen. And yet, just over two weeks later, it’s finished.
Watching as America scrambles to evacuate our own people, the fear among the Afghan people is heartbreaking — men clinging to the wings and doors of aircraft trying to take off, then possibly falling to their deaths when they can hold on no longer. For a while, the evacuation of thousands of Americans was stopped because the runways were filled with terrified citizens fleeing for their lives.
There are over 20,000 Afghans who served alongside our military as translators. The discussion of evacuating them and their families has gone on for months. They have no future when the Taliban take over. Nor do the tens of thousands of Afghan security forces who served with our forces over the years.
And yet here we are, scrambling to get our own people out before the slaughter begins.
Some say it will be a peaceful transition of power. Based on what? There are reports of Taliban soldiers slaughtering Afghan soldiers who were surrendering to the advancing forces purposely to cause fear and terror. The Taliban is going door to door to find those who aligned against them — including men, women and children.
When the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) was overwhelming the South Vietnamese soldiers fleeing from their advance, the NVA fired artillery and mortars on the fleeing soldiers and citizens. Men, women, and children were killed to create more fear and panic.
In Vietnam, after the takeover, the communists executed some members of the South Vietnamese government and some soldiers. Most were placed in “reeducation camps” for years.
Islam has no such “compassion.” Its ideology boils down to: Convert or die! But even then, the Taliban will kill many who sided with the Afghan government, whose president has already fled the country.
For months now, our government has shown nothing but weakness to our enemies. Our secretary of state was schooled by China’s prime minister on American soil.
We’re asking the top sponsor of terror in the world, Iran, to let us make some sort of deal. On and on the list goes: Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea, Iran… Showing weakness always invites bullies to take risks they would not otherwise take when they know there will be consequences.
North Vietnam watched America after the Paris Peace Accords were signed and our troops were withdrawn. Slowly, the communists began attacking, capturing remote district capitals of South Vietnam. Sound familiar? They waited to see how America would respond.
Congress cut any aid to the South Vietnamese government, even as the NVA grew bolder and border. America did nothing. So the all-out offensive began. It was inevitable!
The Taliban, watching how this new administration was responding to its attacks, knew the time was right to go all out. The impossible happened.
Now begins the human tragedy. Will our media stop reporting what’s happening? Like the crisis on the southern border, will they pretend the collapse of Afghanistan didn’t happen? Will AOC go to Kabul and have a photo op of her crying for the poor children of Afghanistan?
Will Nancy Pelosi and top Democrats take a knee in the Capital Rotunda for the people of Afghanistan? Don’t hold your breath!
Something to weep about!
