The Women’s Health Protection Act is a disingenuous name for a bill that was passed in the House of Representatives last week. It does not, in fact, protect women’s health. Rather, it is an attempt to codify Roe v. Wade into law, only it goes far beyond the original constraints of the infamous Supreme Court decision.

Why are pro-abortion politicians suddenly running scared? One reason is the Texas Heartbeat Act that prevents abortions past six weeks gestation. Another is an upcoming Supreme Court case challenging Roe v. Wade to possibly overturn it.

Because the abortion industry is a cash cow for left-wing politicians, losing it would impact their pocketbooks. Ergo, pro-abortion PACs regularly heap millions of dollars on Democrat candidates.

Abortion itself is a hot-button issue and can instantly divide a room of people — especially when adding into the mix other social issues like “transgenderism,” which provides additional victimhood elements to this already fiery issue. The language of the Women’s Health Protection Act gives fuel to this, as do Democrats who accuse the pro-life opposition of racism and bigotry. Leftists invariably pull out these tropes when they have a weak or particularly evil point they are trying to make.

The bill has yet to pass the Senate. But if it does, it would nullify any conscience protections of physicians, eliminate laws allowing doctors to provide other non-abortion options, bar bans on abortions past 20 weeks, and place a proscription on abortion bans based on the baby’s sex. Furthermore, and peculiarly, it would institute abortion rights for “transgender men” or so-called non-binary individuals, make abortion on demand more widely available (but also more medically dangerous), and, most importantly, circumvent laws that states have in place to prevent these appalling and evil measures.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claims the action is merely an opportune moment since Democrats control Congress and the Oval Office. This is a lie. Both the Obama and Clinton administrations also had this political advantage, yet neither would touch the issue legislatively with a 10-foot pole. The Women’s Health Protection Act was originally named the Freedom of Choice Act, and it was created in 2013. However, it was never put to a vote on the House floor because, at the time, most people thought it was too politically toxic, even for the “pro-choice” Democrats.

Ironically, Speaker Pelosi is a Catholic, and the Catholic Church stands with biblical principle against abortion. San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone called for prayer and fasting of parishioners entreating with God to defeat this bill. He criticized Pelosi, saying it was “especially shameful that any self-professed Catholic would be implicated in such an evil, let alone advocate for it.” He also said the bill “is surely the type of legislation one would expect from a devout Satanist, not a devout Catholic.”

He’s right.

As if the hypocrisy, dishonesty, and moral repugnance wasn’t enough reason for any patriotic American to despise this bill, allowing it to become law would irrevocably place our country alongside some of the most violent and dogmatic abortion promoters in the world: North Korea, China, and Vietnam. Sadly, the United States is already somewhat in this category, since some blue states allow elective abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. This is not a hall of fame our country should decorate.

There is a glimmer of hope in the form of this bill being stopped in the Senate. There does not seem to be even 50 supporting votes in that chamber. In fact, some pro-abortion senators stated it’s too extreme even for them. Let’s hope the Senate filibuster remains intact so that this disgraceful piece of legislation gets sent back to the dumpster fire that spawned it.
