The Biden administration has decided to go after parents who publicly object to what their children are being taught in public schools. We have noted over the past year how parents across the country have risen up to challenge their local school boards for subjecting children to the radical leftist indoctrination of Critical Race Theory and “transgender” ideology, as well as to COVID authoritarianism like mandatory masking. Video clips from many of these school board meetings have gone viral as parents from every racial background and both genders (yeah, there are only two) have stood to decry, often with great emotion, what schools are teaching.
As parents become more aware of indoctrination and voice their objections, the National School Boards Association chose not to respond appropriately to parents’ legitimate concerns, but instead to circle the wagons and sic the federal government onto parents.
Last week, the NSBA asked the Biden administration to label parents voicing their objections to CRT and mask mandates at school board meetings as “domestic terrorists.” “America’s public schools and its education leaders are under an immediate threat,” the NSBA asserted. “[As] acts of malice, violence, and threats against public school officials have increased, the classification of these heinous actions could be the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes.”
The trouble is, the examples of “terrorism” that the NSBA cites — such as a person yelling “a Nazi salute in protest to masking requirements” or a school board calling “a recess because of opposition to critical race theory” — do not even remotely fit the definition of “threatening,” let alone criminality or terrorism. In fact, these are classic examples of Americans exercising their First Amendment right to free speech.
But these facts don’t matter when the leftist effort to indoctrinate the next generation is on the line. Cue Attorney General Merrick Garland and his announcement yesterday that he will assemble a Social Justice Department task force. The task force will include members of the “FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Offices [who will] meet in the next 30 days with federal, state, Tribal, territorial and local law enforcement leaders to discuss strategies for addressing this disturbing trend.” So, it’s official: In the fine leftist tradition of weaponizing government, the Biden administration is going to war against parents.
The DOJ sought to defend this decision by claiming there has been “an increase in harassment, intimidation and threats of violence against school board members, teachers and workers in our nations’ public schools.” The agency cited no actual evidence in support of such serious allegations.
No matter. Because there is no actual criminal evidence to cite in defense of this dubious action, the task force will go looking for it. As Fox News reports, “The DOJ will also be launching a task force aimed at addressing the issue, while attempting to determine how the federal government could use its powers to prosecute crimes and to assist local law enforcement in incidents that are not federal crimes.” Indeed, how is this even considered a federal matter? States, not the federal government, are in charge of both public education and local law enforcement.
Andrew McCarthy insightfully observes, “the Biden Justice Department is just a continuation of the Obama Justice Department, which was the most politicized in American history. The Obama/Biden administration modus operandi was to make the process the penalty — in this case, the investigative process, coupled with the threat of Justice Department criminal or civil prosecution, no matter how invalid.”
The reason the NSBA has appealed to the Biden administration to stop certain parents is because several Republican-controlled states, like Florida, have listened to parents and have responded by banning CRT and mask mandates.
This is a classic example of the ruling class responding to those who refuse to adhere to its demands. Just last week, Terry McAuliffe, the Democrat candidate for Virginia governor, said out loud what these leftist elites have long believed: “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”
The Biden administration is taking this elitism to the next level by bullying parents and telling them to shut up about what their children are being taught lest they suffer the consequences.
Meanwhile, after months of rioting, burning, looting, and violence, Biden’s DOJ still refuses to classify antifa or Black Lives Matter as domestic terrorists.
