Every day images of immigrants pouring over the southern border flash across our computer screens and televisions.

During fiscal year 2021, which ended September 30, U.S. authorities detained an astounding 1.7 million illegals.

The increase clearly began when Joe Biden, leading in the presidential polls, promised that he’d undo the “immoral” enforcement of Donald Trump and open the borders to all comers. Biden boasted during a 2019 presidential primary debate, “We’re a nation that says, ‘You want to flee, and you’re fleeing oppression, you should come.’” And they have.

What looks like a serious problem to many Americans is explained away by the Leftmedia and the Biden administration as a necessity. They claim we need hordes of migrants to fill our jobs, to make the country more diverse, and (if you can believe it) to strengthen our national security.

Incredulously, the Left has sold “open borders” as the most compassionate response to the migrant crisis. But what’s compassionate about a policy that puts small children in the hands of coyote smugglers, allows drug dealers and violent criminals to step over the U.S.-Mexico border and into our communities, and tempts people of all ages to trek hundreds of miles in the heat?

“Of course, having created this human disaster, Democrats now claim they have a solution to it,” says Tucker Carlson. “That’s why they created it in the first place — so they could fix it. What’s their solution? Amnesty for eight million. That’s what they proposed, and they may very well get it.”

Sadly, it’s costly not only for illegal migrants but for Americans as well. People are dying, and Biden has no solution other than attracting more migrants. Last week, in fact, we learned that the administration is considering a $450,000 payment to separated migrant families. Biden denied it, but the ACLU confirmed that it’s working on an agreement for just such a payment.

Clearly, politicians on Capitol Hill are failing the American people, and the president hasn’t even visited the border in more than a decade. His “border czar,” Kamala Harris, has been only once, and she didn’t exactly go to a hot spot, either.

Biden’s malfeasance is costing lives.

“The Border Patrol counted 557 migrant deaths along the southern border over the past year, shattering the previous record and putting a body count on the ongoing illegal immigrant surge,” Stephen Dinan writes in The Washington Times. “The situation could have been worse but for heroic efforts by agents, who set a record for rescues, with 12,854.”

Dinan adds: “Catastrophic vehicle crashes also have soared as smugglers increasingly try to make a break for it, leading authorities on high-speed chases. Drownings in the Rio Grande also have risen.”

Countless numbers of migrants also perished in last summer’s intense heat.

In comparison, President Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy hardly looks cruel compared to Biden’s abject failure in not only admitting that a crisis exists but in making a very real humanitarian crisis worse by inviting tens of thousands more to embark on a deadly journey.

But it’s not just illegal migrants who are impacted by open borders.

Some of the migrants are drug runners, sent north by the cartels, and that’s killing thousands of Americans. The scourge of drug abuse is hard enough to contain, but ignoring the border is indirectly killing our family members and friends.

“More than 96,000 people died as a result of a drug overdose [in the last fiscal year], up 30% from the previous year, according to the National Center for Health Statistics,” reports the Washington Examiner. “Opioids, followed by synthetic opioids, were the leading killers.”

We also have to worry about our own government releasing unvetted migrants into our communities, some of whom are violent criminal members of MS-13 and other gangs.

Democrats are famous for claiming any government policy is worth it if one life can be saved, but Joe Biden’s policy of open borders is costing lives. The only solution is to enforce the southern border and implement a pause in immigration, but that’s about as likely as Biden or Harris showing up at the border to physically build a wall.
