Donald Trump’s former adviser Steve Bannon turned himself in to the FBI on Monday after he was charged with two counts of criminal contempt over his failure to comply with a House subpoena to appear before the January 6 Committee and for his refusal to submit requested documents. Bannon has maintained that his refusal to comply is in deference to Trump having invoked executive privilege.

The January 6 Committee is a blatantly politically partisan stunt created by Speaker Nancy Pelosi as part of the Democrats’ ongoing effort to paint all Trump supporters and Republicans in general as radicals who are a danger to the American political system. Democrats continue ignoring or dismissing the months of rioting in cities across the country last year, which only goes to further expose Pelosi’s abject politicizing hypocrisy.

Not only did Pelosi and House Democrats impeach Trump on his way out of office, making a mockery of the whole reason for impeachment, but they have continued to build their political brand around declaring that the January 6 “insurrection” was the worst threat to American democracy since the Civil War.

Attorney General Merrick Garland is supposed to be a man of the law, but he further demonstrated the Democrats’ purely political motivations when he ridiculously asserted that his pursuit of Bannon is proof of “equal justice under the law.” Garland opined: “Since my first day in office, I have promised Justice Department employees that together we would show the American people, by word and deed, that the Department adheres to the rule of, follows the facts and the law, and pursues equal justice under the law. Today’s charges reflect the Department’s steadfast commitment to these principles.”

No, Garland’s decision reflects his clear animus toward the opposition party, causing one to wonder if he is holding a grudge against Republicans for preventing him from gaining a seat on the Supreme Court. Then again, actions like this and his targeting of parents expressing their views to school boards across the country only serve to confirm that Senator Mitch McConnell made the right decision to keep Garland off the Court.

So, what will come of this highly unusual action? Former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy contends: “The Biden Justice Department’s highly unusual and patently politicized congressional contempt indictment of Steve Bannon is a doleful development on every level. It will exacerbate Republican disillusion about the House January 6 Committee. On the other hand, if you believe a congressional investigation of the Capitol riot is important, and that the committee should get Bannon’s evidence, the indictment makes that less likely.”

And in the end, after a likely years-long process, if Bannon loses, he will only suffer a minor penalty. But hey, Democrats must “save democracy” or something.
