Democrats all around the country are working overtime these days to undermine election integrity. They point to the Capitol riot last year and Republican election legislation in various states as evidence that this is an emergency, though they don’t seem to recall how they sowed widespread distrust in the 2016 election. Congressional Democrats are engaged in a full-court press to pass legislation to fundamentally change American elections. That’s why Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are in Georgia today to make big speeches about how they’re trying to save democracy destroy Liberty.
But it’s not just speeches and arguing over possible legislation. Real changes are afoot, like New York City’s new measure granting voting rights (in local elections only) to the Big Apple’s 800,000 green-card-holding noncitizens, so long as they have lived in the city for a mere 30 days. New York City’s population of 8.8 million is bigger than that of 40 states and it’s the first major U.S. city to do this.
No states allow noncitizen voting — in fact, reports the Associated Press, “Alabama, Arizona, Colorado and Florida, have adopted rules that would preempt any attempts to pass laws like the one in New York City.” And, notes the Washington Examiner, “Congress passed a law in 1996 barring noncitizens from participating in federal elections.”
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican at the center of one of the most contentious states in the 2020 election, says that “we should have a constitutional amendment, a U.S. constitutional amendment, that only American citizens vote in our elections.” Public support for a citizenship requirement is quite high.
Our Thomas Gallatin covered NYC’s measure in early December, but it officially took effect Sunday and it will be put into practice for elections beginning in 2023. Unless, that is, a Republican lawsuit succeeds. The Republican National Committee filed suit Monday, rightly alleging that NYC’s measure violates the state constitution’s establishment of the right to vote for citizens.
Mayor Eric Adams, who simply declined to veto the City Council’s measure after letting go of his earlier reservations, said, “I think it is imperative that people who are in a local municipality have the right to decide who is going to govern them.” In other comments, Adams insisted that “New Yorkers should have a say in their government.” Does citizenship mean nothing? If a green-card holder lives in the city 30 days, is he or she now a “New Yorker”? In fact, the votes of actual New Yorkers are now diluted.
“We build a stronger democracy when we include the voices of immigrants,” said former City Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez. No, we sustain our Constitutional Republic when citizenship means something.
Yet Democrats are hell-bent on literally de-meaning citizenship. Between Joe Biden’s wide open southern border and Chuck Schumer’s renewed and possible Senate-changing push for election-altering legislation nationwide, NYC’s move is just the tip of a very dangerous iceberg. The 2020 election was distrusted by millions because Democrats had exploited the pandemic to institute things like bulk-mail balloting. They now want to make such election chaos and fraud permanent.
Biden’s speech today, Schumer’s filibuster-busting in Senate, and New York’s change to city elections are all in the same vein — destroying Liberty to ensure permanent Democrat power.
