The Patriot Post® · As Biden Bumbles, Democrats Tune Out
During the years of the Trump presidency, we heard endless whining, complaining, and hate-filled rants from the Left. But its obsession with the Big Bad Orange Man was a boon for TV news ratings, social media, and late-night comedy shows.
Back in 2018, as political analyst David Bloom quipped, “It might drive many in the media and even more of their readers and viewers crazy to admit it, but two years of Donald Trump as president has been very good for their journalism, and even better for their company bottom lines, if not necessarily for the nation’s future.”
The Left’s continuous outrage over Trump’s very existence — to say nothing of its inability to accept the results of an election — seemed like it would never end. Then Joe Biden became president, and the silence has been deafening ever since. As Axios reports, “A new poll from Gallup and the Knight Foundation finds that younger Democrats are driving a huge decline in national news consumption in the U.S.”
Why?
Could it be that these younger Democrats have suddenly become disinterested in current events? Or might they simply have thrown up their hands and tried to tune out the daily drumbeat of Biden’s disastrous presidency? “The decline among Democrats ages 18-34 is staggering,” as Axios continues. “Roughly a quarter (24%) said they paid a great deal of attention to national news in 2021, compared to 70% in November 2020. Those ages 35-54 also tuned out significantly. Independents that lean Democrat are also paying less attention to national news than Independents that lean Republican, the survey found.”
Apparently, Democrats and their supporters think all’s right with the world when their guy’s in the White House. Suddenly, there’s nothing to complain about, and nothing worth watching on cable news — especially CNN. As Fox News reports:
CNN has been hemorrhaging viewers since former President Trump left office, losing roughly half of its audience in key measurables since January following a brief post-Election Day spike. CNN averaged 2.5 million primetime viewers from Nov. 4, the day following the presidential election, through Inauguration Day on Jan. 20. But viewers fled the liberal network once President Biden took office, and CNN has averaged only 1.6 million primetime viewers from Jan. 21 through March 15.
The loss of viewers and readers has left Democrat-leaning broadcast stations, social media sites, and other information providers scrambling to come up with solutions to stop the exodus and to reengage these viewers. That includes The Amazon Washington Post.
“The Post, like most major publications, experienced an audience surge during the Trump years, when readers flocked to stories about the controversial Republican administration,” reports The Wall Street Journal. “Now, the Post is facing a slump that has triggered some soul-searching at the paper, including over the need to invest more in coverage areas outside of politics.”
In a remarkable twist, more Democrats are now watching Fox News than CNN or MSNBC. How can this be? When a headline from U.S. News & World Report asks, “Why is Biden so Unpopular?” you’ve got your answer.
The lasting impact Trump has over the American electorate and media is evidenced in the fact that hardly a week can go by without Biden, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, or other prominent Democrats mentioning him. Clearly, the former president is living rent-free within their heads. Indeed, in a recent interview on Fox News, South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott said that Trump is “the most powerful voice in politics without any question.”
Yes, Joe Biden is president of the United States, but when Donald Trump speaks, the news world can’t wait to react and report it. And just like old times, they twist and turn every one of his statements. It’s noteworthy, to say the least, that the former president is significantly more appealing to the American media than the current one.
Whether they admit it not, CNN, MSNBC, The Washington Post, Facebook, and Twitter miss Donald Trump. Without him, they’re just not nearly as interesting.
