Samaritan’s Purse, a nonprofit Christian organization headed by Franklin Graham (son of the late evangelist Billy Graham), shows up when disaster strikes to bring humanitarian aid and Christian comfort to people in need. The organization announced on March 3 that it was sending an emergency field hospital to Ukraine where it is desperately needed.

The hospital will consist of 30 beds, an intensive care unit, and an operating room. This enables the staff and disaster specialists to treat up to 100 patients a day.

Samaritan’s Purse is often one of the first groups to respond to the cries of people effected by both natural and manmade disasters. You will find the organization at the scene of severe weather devastation helping clear the debris and bring hope and comfort to the victims. It sent mobile hospitals to New York at the height of the COVID pandemic, serving everyone who wanted and needed medical help — though, in that case, it was chased out by the Christian-hating Rainbow Mafia. You never see Samaritan’s Purse complain, though.

Samaritan’s Purse seeks to follow the instructions outlined by Jesus in the Gospels. Its mission is based on one of Jesus’ more famous parables.

In Luke 10:30-37, Jesus tells of the Good Samaritan. To give some context for this chapter, Jesus was being tested by an expert in Jewish law. The expert said — and Jesus agreed with him — that the two greatest commandments were to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind” and to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But the law expert further asked, “Who is my neighbor?”

In the parable, a Jewish man was attacked on his way to Jericho by robbers and left naked, bleeding, and beaten on the side of the road. Three people happen to come upon him in his great need. The first two, a priest and a Levite (the victim’s own people), passed by him leaving him for dead. The third man, a Samaritan, stopped and helped him. The Samaritans were looked down upon by the Jews, and yet this Samaritan man took pity on the wounded man, brought him to safety, and sacrificed his money and his time to take care of the injured man. Jesus finished the parable by asking who was the injured man’s neighbor. The law expert replied that it was the one who showed mercy to the injured man. Then Jesus commanded, “Go and do likewise.”

This is the standard and the mission of Samaritan’s Purse: to go and give mercy to those in desperate need. Right now, Ukraine is in great need. As Franklin Graham explains it: “Ukrainian families are hurting and in desperate need of physical aid and prayer during this difficult time. We are deploying life-saving medical care to aid people who are suffering. We want to meet the needs of these families in their darkest moments while pointing them to the light and hope of Jesus Christ.”

This is a worthy cause. This organization consistently goes out and does good work not for the fame but to show Christ’s love and to give tangible aid to people in need.
