“On this January day,” said President Joe Unitus some 15 months ago, “my whole soul is in this: Bringing America together. Uniting our people. And uniting our nation.”

He had us at “my whole soul.”

And he went on: “History, faith, and reason show the way, the way of unity. We can see each other not as adversaries but as neighbors. We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop the shouting, and lower the temperature. For without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury. No progress, only exhausting outrage. No nation, only a state of chaos. This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge, and unity is the path forward.”

It was a stirring address, and it called to mind the inaugural eloquence of Abraham Lincoln himself. Why, for a moment we imagined President Unitus harkening back to those “mystic chords of memory,” those “better angels of our nature.” We were enthralled by the very idea of unity, and we imagined a suitably Lincolnian finish to this oratorical masterpiece: With malice toward none, with charity toward all…

Yes, yes, on that brisk January day, President Scranton Joe Big Guy Robinette Unitus made it seem like anything was possible. See for yourself.

But then yesterday, when he was asked about the leaked draft of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s opinion that the 49-year-old jurisprudential abomination known as Roe v. Wade is unconstitutional, Unitus became downright bilious: “What are the next things that are going to be attacked?” he asked. “Because this MAGA crowd is really the most extreme political organization that’s existed in American history — in recent American history.”

Welp, so much for the guy who promised to be “a president for all Americans.” So much for the guy who pledged to “fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did.”

We suppose, though, that when you’ve made a complete mess of the country you purport to love, and when you’re sitting at 33% in the polls, it probably seems like everyone’s wearing a MAGA hat. Even Supreme Court justices.

As for “the next things that are going to be attacked,” here we have a president who keeps plumbing new depths. Here, because a serious and scholarly Supreme Court justice has opined that “Roe and Casey must be overruled,” and that it’s “time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives,” here Joe Biden wants not to unite but divide.

“This is about a lot more than abortion,” he said, pointing to Roe as part of the mysterious right to privacy, one of those “penumbras and emanations,” that a majority of justices used to justify that disastrous 1973 ruling.

“So, the idea that somehow there is an inherent right, that there is no right of privacy, that there is no right,” Biden babbled. “There’d been a law saying a married couple could not purchase birth control in the privacy of their own bedroom and use it. Well, that got struck down. … What happens if … a state changes the law saying … that children who are LGBTQ can’t be in classrooms with other children? Is that … legit under the way the decision is written?”

This is rubbish — and incoherent at that. And it’s the beginning of the Democrats’ next desperate disinformation campaign. If you thought “Jim Crow 2.0” and “Jim Crow on steroids” and “Jim Eagle” were way over the top, get ready for an effort to scare the American people that all their rights hang in the balance. As the editors of The Wall Street Journal write: “First, they ban abortion. Next will be a contraception ban. Then a ban on same-sex and even interracial marriage. Soon we will all be living in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’ That’s the parade of horribles that Democrats and the media are trying to sell Americans.”

So much for decency. So much for integrity. So much for unity.
