“To my friends in the LGBTQ+ community,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot incited, “the Supreme Court is coming for us next. This moment has to be a call to arms.” And just in case folks were unclear, she added, “We will not surrender our rights without a fight — a fight to victory!”

Lightfoot caused quite a stir on social media Monday night with those incendiary remarks, which she tweeted out in response to an impending ruling from the Supreme Court. And rightly so. As the mayor of a city now known for its murders more than anything else, she ought to know better than calling people to arms and vowing to fight.

Had Lightfoot a better sense of the moment, and a better sense of decency, she’d have made it clear that she wasn’t calling for violence — for example, she could’ve exhorted her people to, oh, peacefully and patriotically make their voices heard.

But no. This was an incitement — and, yes, even a call to insurrection — in the event that the Supreme Court doesn’t preserve a woman’s “right” to kill her unborn baby up until the moment of birth.

So we have to ask: Where are the calls for resignation? What about impeachment?

As the Washington Examiner reports, “Earlier in the day, Lightfoot announced a $500,000 investment in the Chicago Department of Public Health to support abortion access for women, according to FOX 32 Chicago, and the mayor said a host of different rights, beyond those associated with abortion, are at risk.”

“This includes women’s rights, trans rights, immigrant rights, and of course the right to same-sex and interracial marriage,” Lightfoot said. “We simply cannot stand idly by and let that happen.”

To the torches and the pitchforks! she all but said. Why, if we didn’t know better, we’d swear that Lightfoot, whose approval rating is hovering somewhere around 30%, is looking for an issue to distract the people of Chicago from her miserable failure as their mayor. But this is what we’ve come to expect from a city leader who routinely plays the race card, who once vowed to grant interviews “only to black or brown journalists,” and who once took to the microphone to say to her fellow Chicagoans, “I have come here to declare systemic racism a public health crisis.”

“Yes, it’s tiresome to catalogue the media-Democrat complex double-standard,” writes National Review’s Andy McCarthy. “But it’s worth pausing over what Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot just said.”

McCarthy went on to list the reasons why a more measured tone is called for: “radical Leftists descending on the homes of Supreme Court justices, threatening the Court as an institution, calling for their shock troops to burn down churches, and attempting to firebomb a pro-life group in Wisconsin.”

Then McCarthy got to the double standard: “According to the theory of the House Democrats’ impeachment article, then–president Trump was guilty of ‘incitement to insurrection’ because he was promoting a lie (namely, that the election had been stolen by fraud) and had rhetorically encouraged people who had been whipped up by the lie to ‘fight’ (‘if you don’t fight like hell you’re not going to have a country anymore’).”

By their own standard, then, Lying Lightfoot deserves impeachment. The Supreme Court isn’t coming for her LGBT+ community next. The justices haven’t even issued a ruling on abortion.

It’s remarkable what even the worst of public servants can get away with so long as they’re attacking the “right” people.
