Tuesday Executive News Summary

Judge blocks Florida’s social media law, pro-abortion advocates promise “Summer of Rage,” and more.

Top of the Fold

  • Judge blocks Florida’s social media law: The U.S. Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a district court’s injunction against Florida’s social media law that sought to prevent larger social media companies from banning politicians on their sites. The impetus for the creation of the law was Twitter’s ban of Donald Trump following the January 6 Capitol riot, with the argument being concern for upholding the right to free speech. Ironically, the Court cited infringement of the First Amendment for its ruling against the law. “It is substantially likely that [the law’s] content-moderation restrictions and its requirement that platforms provide a thorough rationale for every content-moderation action violate the First Amendment,” the court found. Appellate Judge Kevin Newsom wrote, “Put simply, with minor exceptions, the government can’t tell a private person or entity what to say or how to say it.” Florida’s law is similar to a Texas law forbidding social media companies from censoring users over their expressed “viewpoints,” yet in Texas’s case the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the law. The issue is now likely headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

  • Pro-abortion advocates promise “Summer of Rage”: Last week, the Biden administration issued warnings about the potential for “pro-life violence” following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The direction of the warning made absolutely no sense given the unprecedented SCOTUS leak indicating that Roe v. Wade will likely be overturned. Furthermore, there was the protesting and illegal harassment of six of the justices’ homes by pro-abortion activists as well as a slew of leftist attacks against churches. But just to highlight how off-base the Biden administration’s warning is, we now have the pro-abortion group Women’s March promising a “Summer of Rage across America” that will “be ungovernable.” These extremists are making it crystal clear for anyone listening where the threat of genuine violence will be coming from, and those threats aren’t coming from those on the Right.

  • Diversity tit for tat at UNC? The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been denied accreditation for its journalism school, and the reason given has little to do with journalism and everything to do with woke ideology. You see, UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media evidently failed to meet the Left’s racial diversity bar. According to the student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel: “The council’s site team said the journalism school needs to continue to follow its diversity plan and initiatives in student and faculty retention and recruitment specifically. It also said the school needs to include diversity and inclusion within its curriculum.” Reading between the lines, this decision likely has everything to do with UNC’s controversial attempted hire last year of woke race agitator Nikole Hannah-Jones, who gained fame following The New York Times publishing her infamous work of fiction called the “1619 Project.” Hannah-Jones, who has no academic background, was offered a position for five years at an annual salary of $180,000 with an option for tenure after the initial contract was up. She rejected the offer due to lack of a tenure guarantee, while also citing “viewpoint discrimination” and “race and sex discrimination” as further reasons for her decision. It now appears that UNC’s failure to land a dubious “journalist” as a professor has brought the wrath of higher education’s woke-committed radicals. And now the school will be paying the price, as failure to gain accreditation will likely lead to disinterest from prospective students as well as prestige.
