It’s hard to decide whether the woke faux morality displayed by its disciples is entertaining or very boring and highly irritating. The Professional Golfers’ Association’s (PGA) raging vendetta against the new Saudi-backed LIV tour is an example of the former. Sarah Spain, one of the hosts at ESPN, is a perfect example of the latter.
The PGA has long been the premier golf tour with no rivals. That is no longer the case with the advent of the new LIV tour, which recently teed off in London. Several professional players are being lured by large paychecks to play for the LIV. The PGA has denounced those players and banned them, citing breech of contract. The PGA also feels that the LIV league is illegitimate because its financial backers — the petroleum-rich Saudis — are from a kingdom that has a deplorable record on human rights. And yet, the PGA is perfectly willing to do business with China, which is perpetrating actual genocide with impunity.
The PGA using this holier-than-thou virtue signal against the Saudis stands as an indictment to all the pro golfers defecting to the new series in spite of the fact that President Joe Biden is going to Saudi Arabia this month to beg King Salman to produce more oil for the U.S.
Last week, five players from MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays opted not to wear a rainbow patch for Pride Night. They did so because it infringed on their religious beliefs. ESPN’s Sarah Spain went off on these five players, giving them the old leftist woke dress-down for their refusal to wear the patch. She said:
Pride is about inclusion, so you don’t love them and you don’t welcome them if you’re not willing to wear the patch. Calling it a lifestyle reveals to me that you’ve done not even a modicum of research or understanding on this topic, which is what tends to happen when a privileged class isn’t affected by things. … That religious exemption BS, which is used in sports and otherwise, also allows for people to be denied healthcare, jobs, apartments, children, prescriptions, all sorts of rights. And so we have to stop tiptoeing around it because we’re trying to protect people who are trying to be bigoted from asking for them to be exempt from it, when the very people that they are bigoted against are suffering the consequences.
According to her, not wearing a rainbow patch denies rights to LGBTQ+ people. Their “rights” are more important than Americans being able to freely practice and exercise their religious beliefs, in her opinion.
Growing up in the ‘90s, we were told that all the homosexuals wanted was tolerance and to practice their “peculiar” sexual practices in peace. Here we are, 30-odd years later, and that tolerance has turned into totalitarianism. All God-given rights are second fiddle to those of the Rainbow Mob, and this is a constant across the board.
These LGBTQ+ “rights” that are being infringed on are not really being infringed on. It’s just that the Rainbow Mafia is wanting complete submission to its will and agenda. Spain’s blustering is a ridiculous, ill-conceived public exhibition of bigotry against religious people. This is hardly surprising because the leftists want their woke cult to reign supreme. The fact that she has such a megaphone is a sad testament to how woke sports media has become.
For both Sarah Spain and the PGA, using woke virtue signals and talking points to throw their weight around in the world of sports is tawdry and hollow. The PGA is hypocritical and more worried about its bottom line than its social agenda. Spain is merely a mouthpiece, perfectly illustrating all that is wrong with the LGBTQ+ lobby. And yet we sports fans will still watch and hope for brighter days where politics are excised from our sports entertainment.
