The Patriot Post® · On Roe: The Unbridled Hypocrisy of 'Good Catholics' Biden and Pelosi
Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi are “good” Catholics. How do we know? They’ve told us so, even though they stand against the clear teachings of Scripture and their own church.
“Today is a — it’s not hyperbole to suggest a very solemn moment,” Biden pronounced on Friday. “The Supreme Court of the United States expressly took away a constitutional right from the American people that it had already recognized. They didn’t limit it. They simply took it away. That’s never been done to a right so important to so many Americans. But they did it. And it’s a sad day for the Court and for the country.”
We rate his claims false. There never was a constitutional right to abortion. Seven old white men on the Supreme Court simply made up this “right” in 1973. The current Court ruled that they were wrong to do so. That is a marvelous thing for the Rule of Law and for our Constitution that was written to codify the core truths about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness espoused by our Declaration of Independence. It’s a celebratory day for the babies who will live. And it’s a reality check for those who so callously disregard life that they claim a right exists to take away that life.
Biden, of course, isn’t alone. Pelosi also issued an angry rant disguised as a press release. “The Republican-controlled Supreme Court has achieved the GOP’s dark and extreme goal of ripping away women’s right to make their own reproductive health decisions,” she complained. “Because of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, the Republican Party and their supermajority on the Supreme Court, American women today have less freedom than their mothers.”
Think about that last phrase for a moment. Pregnant women today are alive because their mothers chose life. And they still have plenty of freedom to choose — to choose when and with whom to have sex, and whether to use birth control. For those who point to rape or to teens who are victims of incest, every one of those women have to deal with severe trauma, and all of us should have tremendous compassion on them. But it is a lie from the pit of hell that killing the resulting child — who had nothing to do with the circumstances of his or her conception, and who is innocent, defenseless, and alive — will heal the wounds suffered by the mother. It will only compound them.
“This cruel ruling is outrageous and heart-wrenching,” Pelosi said. No, what is heart-wrenching is that a “good” Catholic like her would think the way to deal with a crisis pregnancy is to terminate a life in order to “make the problem go away.”
Lest readers think we’re picking on two Catholics, the Jewish Chuck Schumer’s statement was no different. “Today is one of the darkest days our country has ever seen,” Schumer declared. “Millions upon millions of American women are having their rights taken from them by five unelected Justices on the extremist MAGA court.”
Imagine being as angry as these three are that babies will live. Imagine hating your political opponents so much that you think they’re waiting outside to hand women their Handmaid’s Tale robes and arrest them for getting out of line. Imagine thinking so little of women that you cast them as only victims of society and of men and of conservatives — that they have no ability to think or choose for themselves.
Those are the real lies here, and they are what make Biden, Pelosi, and Schumer very poor representatives of their respective faiths. The God of the Bible, of both Old and New Testament, of both Jew and Gentile Christian, loves life. He breathed it into the first man and then took of his flesh to make a companion woman, both made in His image. He instructed them to “be fruitful and multiply,” not to cull that harvest when it was inconvenient or hard.
Our calling as image bearers is to treat other image bearers with kindness and grace. That means providing for women in crisis pregnancies. It means embracing women who have had abortions in the past. It means caring for the millions more babies who will be born thanks to the correct ruling of the Supreme Court and state legislatures that place premium value on life itself.
No human with any decency should be screaming “Rage!” or, worse, acting upon that rage. That’s especially true of Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, who at least pay some lip service to believing in the things their church teaches. It should be telling, though, that none of the three referenced their faith at all in their statements. Perhaps they knew that would be a bridge too far.
