It’s said that every people gets the government they deserve, and the people of our nation’s capital are no different.

Recently, though, one of those people, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, has become a bit worked up about an influx of illegal aliens flooding into her city and taking up its precious resources. “This is a very significant issue,” she complained this week. “We have, for sure, called on the federal government to work across state lines to prevent people from really being tricked into getting on buses. We think they’re largely asylum-seekers who are going to final destinations that are not Washington, DC.”

For sure. We assume the “trickery” she’s talking about is the ingenious idea of Texas Governor Greg Abbott to invite illegal immigrants onto buses in Texas and ship them to our nation’s capital.

Perhaps, before she starts whining about those “asylum seekers,” Bowser should consider how she got into this mess in the first place. Because there was a time, not too long ago, when “asylum seekers” had to cool their heels in Mexico rather than being surreptitiously transported in the dead of night to cities large and small all around our nation. As the Washington Examiner reports:

Before Trump instituted his Remain in Mexico policy, over 100,000 migrants were being arrested after illegally crossing the southern border every month. Once Remain in Mexico was fully implemented, that number plummeted. Migrants don’t risk illegally crossing the border when they know they will be denied entry if caught instead of being released on purpose into the interior of the U.S.

What a difference a president can make, eh, Muriel?

Unfortunately, Joe Biden now owns the southern border he intentionally opened. In a 5-4 decision last month, the Supreme Court made it official by ruling that the Biden administration had acted within its discretion by ending Trump’s Remain in Mexico program. Here, of course, a distinction must be made between “discretion” and “good sense.” Because the wise policies of one’s predecessor can’t help a guy if he chooses to undo them. Which is exactly what Biden has done.

At first, Democrats probably viewed the Supreme Court’s ruling as a victory for their side, but it isn’t. Team Biden has sanctimoniously claimed to be pursuing a more “humane” approach at the southern border, but that “humane” approach recently enticed more than 50 migrants to cook to death at the hands of human smugglers in an abandoned trailer that may have reached 150 degrees.

What’s more, the Democrats had counted on winning over the Hispanic vote with such “humane” open-border policies, but they were sorely mistaken. Indeed, their policies have boomeranged, and they’ve resulted in Hispanic Americans fleeing the party in droves. Witness the election last month of Republican Maya Flores in Texas, in a congressional district that’s 84% Hispanic.

And so, here we are. As the Examiner continues:

On direct orders from President Joe Biden, the Department of Homeland Security released 79,652 migrants into the United States last month after they were detained for illegally crossing the southern border. This brings the total number of illegal immigrants caught and released into the U.S. on Biden’s watch to 1,335,959.

That is a population larger than nine states and twice that of the District of Columbia. At this pace, Biden will catch and release over 3.5 million illegal immigrants into the U.S. in his first term — a population larger than that of Chicago.

Clearly, then, Bowser’s NIMBY beef should be with her party’s standard-bearer — the man who purposefully opened up the floodgates through which those “asylum seekers” have poured.

“Local taxpayers are not picking up the tab and should not pick up the tab,” Bowser said. “We really need a coordinated federal response.”

But if Bowser is looking for sympathy, she won’t find it from those whose states border Mexico. “Mayor Bowser’s suggestion is offensive,” tweeted Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, “to border states whose homeless shelters and non-profit organizations are overwhelmed with the humanitarian crisis at our nation’s southern border.”

Ducey continued: “Welcome to our world, Mayor Bowser. Now work with your party, your Congress, and your President to do something about it.”
