If congressional Republicans had any brains, one of the promises they’d run this fall would be to kick in the doors on the FBI’s 7th floor and investigate its occupants six ways to Sunday.

The 7th floor is shorthand for the bureau’s senior management, which has become grotesquely and perhaps irredeemably political. So much so that an unprecedented outpouring of whistleblowers have come forward to Republican investigators in Congress, especially in the wake of the last week’s raid on President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

“Fourteen FBI agents have come to our office as whistleblowers, and they are good people,” said Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, whose constitutional duty it is to provide oversight into the performance of the bureau. “There are lots of good people in the FBI. It’s the top that is the problem. Some of these good agents are coming to us, telling us what is baloney, what’s going on — the political nature now of the Justice Department — God bless them for doing it — talking about the school board issue, about a whole host of issues.”

These whistleblowers include two who’ve come forward regarding the DOJ’s outrageous “school board memo,” four who’ve come forward about matters of political bias related to January 6, and still others who claim that the bureau is purging employees with conservative views.

And yet, infuriatingly, FBI Director Christopher Wray doesn’t seem at all concerned. Either that, or he’s hiding under his desk. How else to explain his utter failure to respond to the three letters sent to him beginning in late May by the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Iowa’s Chuck Grassley?

Grassley says whistleblower allegations reveal a “deeply rooted political infection” within the FBI. In an August 17 letter to Wray, Grassley demanded an accounting for alleged political bias influencing high-level investigations, particularly out of the FBI’s DC office.

“Starting on May 31, 2022,” Grassley’s letter begins, “I’ve written three letters to you regarding political bias that has infected the FBI’s Washington Field Office. Two of those letters provided specific and credible allegations based on numerous whistleblowers that have approached my office with information that one can only conclude is indicative of a deeply rooted political infection that has spread to investigative activity into former President Trump and Hunter Biden.”

Grassley says that the FBI approved an investigation into the Trump campaign despite questionable predication while also choosing to shut down investigative activity into Hunter Biden, which included a trove of verified and verifiable information.

And yet, crickets from Wray. Grassley isn’t going away, though. His latest missive to the director ends with this demand:

In light of the FBI’s failure to respond to my legitimate oversight requests, please provide a comprehensive organization chart for the Washington Field Office. The purpose of this request is to better understand how the Washington Field Office is staffed, who is responsible for the units and squads within the office and to prepare for future congressional interviews. As you are aware, Assistant Special Agent in Charge Tim Thibault is not the only politically biased FBI agent at the Washington Field Office. The FBI answers to Congress and the American people, so please provide the comprehensive organization chart no later than August 31, 2022.

We’ll see whether Wray responds.

If Anthony Fauci was Donald Trump’s worst personnel decision, the smarmy, pencil-pushing Wray has to be second on that list. But never fear. There’s nothing to see here at the bureau — not according to Wray, nor according to disgraced former Counterintelligence Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok, he of Spygate and “Russia collusion” infamy.

“Absolutely the American public should trust what the FBI is doing,” Strzok recently told the credulous viewers of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Absolutely.
