  • Cops leaving NYC: Escape from New York seems to be a growing trend among the Big Apple’s finest. The New York City Police Department saw 3,701 officers retire or resign in 2022, the highest number since 2002. With the NYPD hiring 1,982 officers last year, it leaves the department roughly 1,700 officers short. Listed among the leading reasons for officers exiting the NYPD include bail reform laws, the city’s COVID vaccine mandate, the movement to defund the police, a growing climate of disrespect for police officers, and higher pay elsewhere in less stressful environments. Retired NYPD Sergeant Joseph Giacalone, an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, observed that “the city is bleeding blue” and “at this rate, continued public safety weighs in the balance.” One of the officers to leave NYC for greener pastures is Alexandre Tilan, who moved to Florida and joined the St. Petersburg Police Department. Tilan noted a greater respect for law enforcement in the Sunshine State, and despite receiving lower pay than in New York, his take-home pay is “higher because of the lack of state and city tax." Regarding the growing exodus of New York’s cops, NYC Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch warned, "If it continues any longer, it will totally erase the public safety gains we’ve made over the past year.”

  • Colorado caves to Chicago and New York: After the Democrat mayors of New York City and Chicago objected to Colorado busing illegal aliens to their cities, Democrat Governor Jared Polis has decided to reverse course. In a statement from his office issued after a meeting between Polis and Mayors Eric Adams and Lori Lightfoot, there will no more bus trips delivering illegals from Denver to Chicago and New York. The statement further noted, “The state is partnering with the city of Denver and non-profits to continue assisting the city of Denver to continue to ensure this process is being conducted in a humane manner.” Polis had previously justified the busing of illegal aliens to Chicago and New York by contending that he was simply accommodating their destination wishes. New York and Chicago have received a respective 36,400 and 3,854 illegal aliens over the last nine months. Meanwhile, the border states of Arizona and Texas have been inundated with thousands of illegals on a daily basis.

  • A Freedom Caucus member wins an important gavel: Representative Mark Green (R-TN) won the chairmanship for the influential and important House Committee on Homeland Security over Representative Dan Crenshaw (R-TX). Green, who is a member of the Freedom Caucus and a rising star in Republican circles, is a doctor and a former Army Ranger Infantry Officer with three combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. He responded to winning the chair by stating that he is “grateful to [Speaker Kevin McCarthy] and the House Republican Steering Committee for entrusting me with this task; it’s time to get to work and fulfill our Commitment to America!” Green also expressed his appreciation to Crenshaw for “his friendship and leadership.” Some have speculated that the more well-known Crenshaw damaged his chances for the committee chairmanship when he referred to 20 Freedom Caucus members as “terrorists” for their initial holdout votes against McCarthy. Crenshaw did walk that back a bit.
