An assistant principal at a high school in Providence, Rhode Island, has come under fire for asking his staff members via email for donations to help an undocumented student pay his debt to a “coyote” who smuggled him into the U.S. The email reads: “We have a student who came to America with ‘Coyote’, which is a group that helps people. This groups gives you a time frame to make a payment of $5000 dollars to those, who bring them into the states. Our student needs our urgent support to raise another $2000 to meet his goal of $5000 by February 1st, 2023.”

This story raises many questions. What led a student to ask his school for money to pay off his smuggler? Those who have been raised in Hispanic or Latino families know how private families are about their citizenship status. This is information that is only known amongst family and sometimes close friends. This high school incident makes one wonder if the student was being threatened by the coyote or is already in danger.

Next, how did the assistant principal conclude that coyotes are a group that help people? Coyotes are not known for their noble deeds of helping others in need. In fact, coyotes often work with the Mexican cartels to extort and harass the people they smuggle. Many stories can be found online about coyotes leaving people stranded or ditching children, leaving them in dangerous conditions.

The New York Post writes: “‘There is no way you can cross Mexico without paying off a cartel,’ said Landon Hutchens, a spokesman for US Customs and Border Protection in El Paso. ‘The coyotes are the worst travel agents in the world, and they have no regard for human life.’” Among Hispanic and Latino communities, coyotes are not thought of as friends. They are thought of as people whom you must be wary of and careful around. Not paying off a debt to a coyote is dangerous for the person who was smuggled into the U.S. and their family.

Finally, does the Left truly understand the Hispanic and Latino communities? This incident would indicate that it does not. The Left does not truly understand what Hispanic and Latino communities go through when one of theirs sends a mass email asking for donations to pay off a human smuggler. The concept of illegal immigration has become fantasized and treated as an incredible journey when, in fact, it is a life-threatening journey that has claimed many lives.

The Left does not understand that illegal immigration comes with human trafficking, the recycling of children, and drugs. It does not understand that illegal immigration creates a permanent class of people that will not have the same rights as an American citizen. For many on the Left, not having borders feels like a noble cause to fight for, when in reality they fight for the continuation of human trafficking and the expansion of Mexican drug cartels.
