House GOP passes immigration bill: As Title 42 expired on Thursday and the border devolved into utter chaos and humanitarian disaster, House Republicans passed an immigration bill dubbed the Secure the Border Act that specifically targets the growing problem of illegal border crossings and drugs pouring into the country. As House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) explained, “The key component of this bill is where we say, ‘If you come to our country, you will get to, according to the law, file your asylum claim … but you will be detained or you will be returned while your claim is adjudicated.’” The bill, which no Democrat voted for, would require migrants to apply for asylum outside the U.S., restart construction on the border wall, and beef up law enforcement along the border. It is unlikely to advance in the Democrat-controlled Senate, but with the border crisis becoming a key issue for voters, lawmakers are unlikely to ignore it either.
Dispatches from an alternate universe: With some 700,000 migrants now surging across the U.S. southern border following the end of Title 42 — on top of the record numbers of illegal aliens who have entered the country since Joe Biden took office — NBC News dropped a story claiming there are not enough immigrants. In an article titled “Dwindling immigration puts squeeze on home building,” NBC asserts that Donald Trump’s tough illegal immigration enforcement polices are directly responsible for shrinking the country’s home construction workforce. Of course, NBC doesn’t bother to delineate the important distinction between legal and illegal immigration. The real question is, with record numbers of illegal aliens flowing across Biden’s de facto open border, what are these masses of migrants doing? That is the more troubling question, not handwringing over the apparent lack of an illegal workforce.
Good news: A gun win in court: On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Robert E. Payne sided with the Constitution when he struck down a long-standing federal ban on licensed firearm dealers selling handguns to 18- to 20-year-olds. The ban, enacted in 1968 as part of the Gun Control Act, was ruled unconstitutional by Payne, who wrote, “Because the statutes and regulations in question are not consistent with our Nation’s history and tradition, they, therefore, cannot stand.” In making his decision, Payne noted the glaring inconsistency in the law, which allowed for private sales of handguns to those under the age of 21, and furthermore the recognition of 18 as the legal age of adulthood where an individual can enlist in the military. The ban infringed on the Second Amendment rights of adults.
New Head Twit: Elon Musk, the self-described “Head Twit,” has reportedly found his new Twitter CEO. Of the hire, Musk tweeted: “She will be starting in ~6 weeks! My role will transition to being exec chair & CTO, overseeing product, software & sysops.” So, who is taking over leadership at Twitter? Well, in what appears to be a rather head-scratching movie, Musk’s choice is Linda Yaccarino, who just resigned as head of NBCUniversal’s advertising but also chairs a World Economic Forum task force on Future of Work. Musk’s decision to step down as CEO of the social media giant he acquired last year is in keeping with his promise to abide by the results from his polling of Twitter users. It will be interesting to see if Yaccarino maintains Musk’s commitment to making Twitter a free speech platform.
Bud Light takes incoming fire from the Left: With Bud Light sales continuing to drop in every region of the country, Anheuser-Busch is not only being boycotted by conservatives but is also now taking fire from the Rainbow Mafia. Four gay bars in Chicago removed Anheuser-Busch products from their menus due to the beer company’s supposed failure to support the LGBTQ community following the kerfuffle over Dylan Mulvaney. According to bar owner Mark Robertson, Anheuser-Busch chose “to cut and run” rather than offer support “when a portion of our community is under direct attack on a day-in and day-out basis, which is what is happening to the transgender community.” Please. Anheuser-Busch could have easily avoided this fiasco if it had chosen to not wade into the culture war and simply stuck with the business of making and selling beer. But alas, thanks to ESG adherence, the company is in a no-win situation.
Speaker McCarthy cancels Tlaib’s Jew-hating event: Anti-Semitic Democrat Representative Rashida Tlaib will not be able to host an anti-Israel event using the Capitol Visitor Center thanks to a move by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy not only canceled Tlaib’s anti-Israel event but announced that he “will host a bipartisan discussion to honor the 75th anniversary of the US-Israel relationship.” The advertisement for Tlaib’s event sounded like something produced by Hamas: “May 15th marks 75 years since the beginning of the Nakba, which means ‘catastrophe.’ Seventy-five years ago, Zionist militias and the new Israeli military violently expelled approximately three-quarters of all Palestinians from their homes and homeland in what became the state of Israel.” McCarthy defended his decision to cancel Tlaib’s planned event to host nine anti-Israel groups by stating, “It’s wrong for members of Congress to traffic in anti-Semitic tropes about Israel.” Unfortunately, despite McCarthy’s efforts, Tlaib’s anti-Semitic show will still go on thanks to Senator Bernie Sanders, who extended the use of a Senate committee room for the event. And yet it is Republicans who are dubiously branded “Nazis” by the Leftmedia.
