Cross-Examination

  • The falling president: While handing out diplomas at the U.S. Air Force Academy on Thursday, 80-year-old Joe Biden fell on stage. He turned and pointed to explain his fall to the three men who had to help him get up, and he later joked that he “got sandbagged” by an actual sandbag on stage. Given concerns about his age and clearly diminishing physical and mental health, however, this latest fall is yet another reason to worry he can’t handle the rigors of the job. More to the point, the nation isn’t doing so well under his stewardship, a point Ron DeSantis hilariously made in his response. “We hope and wish Joe Biden a swift recovery from any injuries he may have sustained,” he said, “but we also wish the United States of America a swift recovery from the injuries it has sustained because of Joe Biden and his policies.”

  • The Biden economy is doing just dandy: The U.S. Department of Labor released jobs numbers for May this morning, and the economy saw a “better than expected” addition of 339,000 jobs, with the headline unemployment rate sitting at 3.7%. Those are good numbers, of course, but there are still a lot of reasons to worry about the economy. Cumulative inflation since Joe Biden took office is about 16%, though he loves to brag about how “wages have gone up more than prices have gone up.” Wage growth, unfortunately, is also a cause of inflation, and Biden is wrong — wages did not keep up with inflation. In fact, CNBC reports that higher wages are leading to “a nearly fivefold increase in layoffs across some industries.” Moreover, consumers continue to cut back on restaurant visits and shopping at big retailers. But everything’s just fine. Biden promises.

  • Biden can now raise the debt ceiling: Republicans and Democrats agreed to kick the fiscal can down the road last weekend. By a vote of 314-117, the House passed a debt ceiling hike Wednesday, and the Senate followed suit yesterday, voting 63-36. The measure now goes to Joe Biden’s desk, and he is expected to sign the bill. The deal suspends the debt ceiling until January 1, 2025, when we can look forward to another game of Debt Ceiling Apocalypse right after the presidential election.

  • Team Biden to legalize more illegals through phone app: Maybe the best way to reduce illegal border crossings is to make the border crossings legal. That’s the lesson Team Biden seems to be employing with its latest program for admitting migrants. CBP One, an app made available by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), allows for migrants to more easily apply for entry via their phones on the way here. Homeland Security spokeswoman Erin Heeter explained, “The process cuts out smugglers while also providing a safe, orderly, and humane process for noncitizens to access ports of entry instead of attempting to enter the United States unlawfully.” Cutting out the middle man just means more border crossers. The app launched in January, and from then through April, 79,000 migrants scheduled appointments via the app. Beginning in June, the administration announced it will expand that program to accept 40,000 applications a month.

  • Sologamy: “These women wanted a symbolic expression of self-love,” reads a CNN headline. “So they married themselves.” The article adds: “The practice is called sologamy. Its adherents may be on to something, [an] expert says.” Narcissists everywhere want to know: If you marry yourself more than once, is that polysologamy? What if you changed pronouns — would that then be polytransologamy? What if you have an extramarital affair with yourself? And divorce could get complicated. Oh, so many questions!
