Last week we talked about life’s wounded — those we pass by nearly every day. Many of us have been able to block them out of our mind. We go about life and hardly see the casualties around us because their wounds are deep inside, invisible to the naked eye.

I’ve worked with people with addictions for over 45 years now. Many times we look at those who are bound by their addictions and wonder why they won’t just stop. Yes, I have met some who were able to conquer their addictions by sheer will power, but they are very few in number.

We need to realize an addiction is not the real problem; it’s only a symptom of a much deeper problem. We turn to substances, sex, pornography, work, material things, or any one of a number of activities to forget the pain.

Perhaps it’s the memory of our parents’ bitter divorce or the pain of years of sexual abuse by a family member or friend.

Perhaps it’s the memory of the abortion we willingly took part in because we were told by medical experts it was just a blob of “tissue,” when something deep inside knew that was a lie.

Now we have parents being told that their children need to go through life-altering physical mutilation to transition into another sex, or else they might commit suicide, instead of providing the help they really need to grow up as a normal child.

At times, we might become overwhelmed by what we see happening all around us. When did all of this craziness begin? When did we learn, after thousands of years of human history, there are many genders? That men can become women and get pregnant, or women can become men?

In reality, it began thousands of years ago in the Garden of Eden, when the serpent convinced Adam and Eve, “You can become your own gods!”

It’s true: “What one generation tolerates, the next generation embraces.” My generation (Baby Boomers) tolerated sex, drugs, rock and roll, and abortion. Where we are now is because we have removed the one factor that governs the universe. There is a God in Heaven who grieves for generations of those who try to live their lives outside the moral laws of Heaven.

We’re reaping what we have sown.

But it’s not too late for our nation. I believe the loneliness and hunger for meaning in the younger generations will lead to a move of God that will shake the nation, just as it did during the First and Second Great Awakenings. Parents and grandparents are literally bombarding the Gates of Heaven, asking God to do it again. Give us another Pentecost! Fulfill your promise to your servant Solomon when you said:

“If My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (II Chronicles 7:14, NASB).

As long as we have hope, it is never too late to see America return to the faith of our Founding Fathers to heal our wounded nation.

Something to pray about!
