“A human group transforms itself into a crowd when it suddenly responds to a suggestion rather than to reasoning, to an image rather than an idea, to an affirmation rather than to proof, to the repetition of a phrase rather than to arguments, to prestige rather than to competence.” (Jean-Francois Revel)
A logical extension of that thought would be that a group transforms itself into a mob when suggestion, images, and the repetition of phrase degenerates further to emotional goading and race baiting. This is the ongoing treatment of the Martin/Zimmerman case we are witnessing presently from the likes of Al Sharpton and Mr. Obama.
Their purpose is clear: they are not interested in a fair exposition of the facts, they are interested in fomenting distrust and resentment, and in that effort they are having some success.
Al Sharpton’s entire career seems to have been characterized by this kind of race hustling, and, shameless and harmful as it is, at least he never pretended to anything else.
But Mr. Obama took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, a document that speaks to peace, liberty, and the God given right to the pursuit of happiness shared by all of us. “The People” refers to all of us, Mr. Obama, not some particular segment of us with whom you pretend some common cause. The list of instances where you have ignored, suborned, and violated the constitution and the laws of this land is long, and it grows longer daily. But of them all, the greatest harm you are doing is your attempts to divide us, to break the unity that has made this the greatest nation in the world.
I am convinced the hubris and cynicism that leads people like Mr. Obama to believe they have the right to do this is caused partly by the fact they don’t believe in people, they believe in their own statist goals, which have invariably led to total collapse of whatever country on which it has been foisted.
Mr Obama’s pretension to “leadership” is like a mask that he uses, a dodge that allows him to hide behind the auspices of his office, and he takes full advantage of the gullibility of those of us who are so easily misled to further the damage he is causing.
While this goes on, the rest of us are betrayed daily by the only people in a position to stop it all, the United States Congress.
In the end, it will be up to us, The People, to fix all this. By “us” I don’t mean a lot of 60-something retired Marines. I mean all of us, young and old. And sadly that also includes a lot of children, who will grow up to confront the fact that the people who created all the damage have left the stage, and they are stuck with the aftermath. I trust they will remember that not all of us were a party to this. If they succeed in putting this country back together, it will be because they recognize the brilliance and the wisdom of the founders, and the fact of God’s hand in this country’s birth, and put the memory of people like Mr. Obama, and the people who enabled him, in it’s proper context.
I believe that whatever they have to do to restore this nation, they will succeed, for two reasons: First, because this nation is unique in the fact that it was founded on the conviction that our freedom is a gift from God, and second, because unlike Mr. Obama, I believe in people.
“If men, through fear, fraud, or mistake, should in terms renounce or give up any natural right, the eternal law of reason and the greater goal of society would absolutely vacate such renunciation. The right to freedom being the gift of Almighty God, it is not in the power of man to alienate this gift and voluntarily become a slave.” (Samuel Adams)
