A “perfect storm” is coming about for the idea of a Convention of States (COS) where delegates from at least 34 state legislatures gather to propose amendments to the US Constitution. The COS would operate under authority of Article V of the Constitution and be limited in scope to proposing amendments to limit the power and overreach of the federal government, impose term limits on federal officials, and impose fiscal restraints on the federal government.

Elements of this “perfect storm” include 1) the recent call for a COS by such national figures as Colonel Allen West; 2) the extremely low public approval ratings of Congress and the Executive branches of the federal government; 3) the high degree of dysfunction and party “politics” in the Congress; 4) the numerous scandals involving different federal agencies and onerous federal regulations; 5) the recent landslide election of conservative state law makers throughout the US; 6) the recent Presidential Executive Order dealing with illegal aliens; and 7) the high degree of planning for a COS by the Assembly of State Legislatures consisting of over 100 law makers from over 30 states.

As Allen West says,“The convening of an Article V convention is a viable tool for the states and the people. … The Assembly of State Legislatures (ASL) will discuss the rules for the first-ever Article V Constitutional amendment convention. This is their third meeting. They’re preparing to take on Washington, and Congress doesn’t like it.”

Beginning in January 2015, 36 state legislatures will commence their legislative sessions. It is very important for all concerned Americans to contact their state representatives and senators to express support for a COS that will propose amendments to change the way in which Washington, DC, operates.
