You may remember the tune from Tina Turner:

“What’s love got to do, got to do with it
What’s love but a sweet old fashioned notion
What’s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken”

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani hit the liberal buzz saw last week when he questioned President Obama’s “love” for America, saying “I do not believe that the President loves America. He doesn’t love you. He doesn’t love me.” Many republicans engaged in CYA maneuvers as well.

It’s easy to argue Giuliani crossed the line when he made the comments before a group of businessmen – after all, who can judge one’s heart? Especially the heart of the President of the United States, the one person every citizen believes should have our best interests at heart?

But millions of Americans probably applauded the comments, though be it quietly.

Why? To hazard an analogy, suppose your spouse promises to “fundamentally transform” you after taking your solemn wedding vows; you will no longer watch a certain a television program, you will now vote a certain way, you will change your hair color, you will change your friends, you will drive a different car.

Any married person accepts a certain amount of change – yes, I will clean up my place after eating, I will put the seat down, I will work with you, not against you, for all things common. I will keep a job, I will build and protect the home.

And millions of Americans truly “hoped” for “change” in this president. An improving economy, better racial relations, an end of war in the Middle East, true transparency in governance.

But look at the past six years.

Taxes, spending, and non-participation rates of workers are all at all-time highs. The “improving unemployment” rate is full of smoke and mirrors as 92 million Americans no longer show up to be counted while countless others scamper to find part-time work – and food stamps and other welfare levels are at all-time highs.

We have a culture that now sues 70-year-old florists for politely refusing to participate in a gay union and had the audacity to stand by her religious beliefs – and dozens of stories can be found showing American school children are now being indoctrinated with leftist slants toward sex, religion, and subservience to an all-powerful government from on high.

Meanwhile, military strength, in this time of ISIS, is at an all-time low – and not only will the President not identify the enemy, but invites the Muslim Brotherhood to the White House. Is not the Brotherhood the Grandfather of Al-Qaida, who were violently introduced to the American people on September 11th, 2001?

Add abuses at the VA, the NSA, IRS, and EPA, all with scandals in opposition to the wishes of the “spouse” of the American citizen.

Would a spouse call it “love” by allowing such abuse?

Would a spouse lie about the cost of a new program for the house, such as “affordable health care”? Or whether we could even access it?

Would a spouse prevent their soul mate from “bringing home the bacon” (incidentally, containing a word now reportedly banned by Oxford Printing Press) through more demands that endangers their job and stifles hiring?

Would a spouse secretly record and examine all communications one has with others and then endanger them with that information personally, economically, politically, and culturally?

Would a spouse throw open the doors of the home to anyone to walk in and take anything they wish, regardless of existing law, as is the attempt with 5 million illegal immigrants?

Would a spouse ignore the original vow to protect and keep the foundation of the rule of law, instead ignoring the original legal document that forged the union, the U.S. Constitution? Would they ignore it and/or change the contract at will, in effect saying history, law, tradition, be damned?

I will not question the heart of the President – I am sure he “loves” this nation and its people – but I fear, as do millions of other Americans, he is more in love with a utopic vision that breaks the bedrocks of the wedding vow taken between our citizens and its rulers, throwing them to the wind.

Perhaps Tina was right – “What’s love but a sweet old fashioned notion.”

But who “needs a heart when that heart has been broken” – repeatedly, and with impunity? Do we still feel the love?

Sometimes New York Yankees – abusive and inappropriate as they can sometimes be - simply speak the truth.
