THE FOUNDATION

“Every man who loves peace, every man who loves his country, every man who loves liberty ought to have it ever before his eyes that he may cherish in his heart a due attachment to the Union of America and be able to set a due value on the means of preserving it.” —James Madison (1788)

IN TODAY’S EDITION

IN BRIEF

The Real Strategy for Trump and Democrats

As the firestorm ignited by President Donald Trump’s social-media comments against four extreme leftist Democrat congresswomen known as “The Squad” entered its third day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) sought to add fuel to the fire by holding a vote on a resolution to rebuke and condemn Trump’s comments as “racist.” Ironically, what unfolded on the floor of the House became yet another embarrassing example of Democrat hypocrisy, as Pelosi proceeded to unapologetically break a Democrat-created parliamentarian rule in her effort to label Trump a racist. The rule in question, as House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) explained, forbids “characterizing an action as racist,” but it did nothing to either prompt Pelosi to back off her remarks or prevent every single Democrat siding with the speaker. Once again, for the Left, the rules only apply to the opposition.

The clear goal for Pelosi and the Democrats was to officially label Trump a racist. And like clockwork, the propaganda arm of the Democrat Party, The Washington Post, reported it with these two headlines: “A divided House votes for resolution condemning Trump’s racist remarks,” and then, “Trump’s racist comments can be used against him in court as judges cite them to block policies.” When you can’t win the argument on its merits (or lack thereof), charge your opponent with “racism.” Democrats have been playing this slanderous game a long time.

Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) weighed in on Tuesday, rebuking leftist “Squad” member Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) for her repeated statements of “bitterness and anger toward the country.” Paul added, “She says this is terrible, a place without justice and all this.” He then set the record straight, noting, “She’s a congresswoman. She got here as a refugee 20 years ago. She’s elected to Congress. I can’t imagine a better country that elected her to Congress and she badmouths our country.”

A final observation: While it is clear what the intent of Democrats and the Leftmedia is, what seems to be less obvious to many is what Trump is doing. As we noted Monday, he has successfully induced Democrats to circle the wagons around the most radical (and unpopular) members of their party, which Tuesday’s House vote demonstrates. However, what many may not appreciate is the fact that he has steered the conversation toward the question of what constitutes true American values. In so doing, his goal is to set himself up as the only unapologetically pro-American presidential candidate in 2020. His aim is to pressure the Democrat presidential candidates into appearing to campaign against not just him but against America. And thus far Democrats have failed to avoid his trap.

Planned Parenthood Ousts Insufficiently ‘Woke’ CEO

Just eight months into her tenure, Leana Wen was fired as Planned Parenthood’s president Tuesday. She succeeded Cecile Richards last November, but Wen, a woman of color and a committed leftist, wasn’t radical enough for the nation’s largest abortion mill. Given that Planned Parenthood rakes in more than $500 million every year from American taxpayers, many of whom view abortion as a tragedy to be ended, this is significant news.

The specifics are even more galling. Wen last year insisted, “People aren’t coming to Planned Parenthood to make a political statement. They’re coming because they need their vaccinations. They need their well-woman exams. They’re getting HIV tests.” (Definitely not mammograms, though.) She also said in her departure statement, “I believe the best way to protect abortion care is to be clear that it is not a political issue but a health care one.”

Planned Parenthood’s board members, however, clearly view abortion as their mission (PP averages 320,000 abortions each year), and Wen was not sufficiently on message. (That mission was always clear to most Americans, but the board explicitly declared it by removing Wen.) Board members also see abortion as primarily a political issue and wanted a social-justice warrior, not a physician like Wen, to lead the charge, especially when so many states are directly challenging Roe v. Wade with restrictions on abortion and the Trump administration implemented a new rule cutting $60 million in funding from Planned Parenthood.

In a sense, the board is right. The Hippocratic Oath historically taken by physicians says, “I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm.” (The phrase “first, to do no harm,” is a later development along the same lines.) An abortion by definition harms (i.e., terminates the life of) a preborn human. Ergo, abortion is arguably better understood as a political and cultural issue.

Furthermore, there was the whole issue of Wen not submitting to the transgender movement’s increasing power. She reportedly refused to use “trans-inclusive” language and would not agree that men can have babies. Apparently, in today’s “woke” radical-leftist climate, Planned Parenthood couldn’t be effectively led by someone who believes in that science.

Wen will be replaced temporarily by board member Alexis McGill Johnson during the search for a permanent replacement. Of course, no leader of this massive taxpayer-funded abortion mill is going to be palatable to those who value the sanctity of life, and as long as Planned Parenthood is violating the very right to life given each human by his or her Creator, there will continue to be a political and cultural fight.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Marc A. Thiessen: “Democrats were for rule of law when it comes to the Mueller probe, which did not find that the president broke the law. But they are against rule of law when it comes to illegal immigrants who have been found by a federal judge to be in violation of U.S. immigration law. … It is a long process to get to the point where ICE is knocking on someone’s door to enforce a final order of removal. Those now subject to a final deportation order either failed to show up to immigration court; showed up and lost their case; waived their right to appeal; lost their appeal; did not show up for their appeal hearing; were granted voluntary departure but did not leave; or failed to turn themselves in to ICE for court-ordered removal. In each case, a federal judge has ruled that they do not have the right to be in the United States and must leave. But Democratic leaders are now saying they should be allowed to stay, in contravention of our immigration laws. … So, it’s a little hard to take Democrats seriously when, in investigating Trump, they claim to be fighting for the principle that no one is above the law.”

SHORT CUTS

Upright: “Like many Americans, I am tired of being lectured about racism by racists and racialists, individuals whose full-field explanation for all life’s issues is this matter of genetic happenstance that should be increasingly irrelevant in a pluralistic society.” —Andrew McCarthy

Observations: “When words are over-used or misused, they lose their power. That’s why we all learn the story of the boy who cried wolf. If ‘racism’ is used to refer to everything that is seen as bad and as seen as having anything to do with ‘other-ness,’ people start tuning it out. Because it is used to mean so many things, it begins to mean nothing. Its horribleness then becomes more difficult, not less, to recognize and counteract.” —Quin Hillyer

Political futures: “Here’s the problem: The Democrats are now a radical anti-American, anti-freedom, anti-capitalist party, and it would be a tragedy for our country if we lost the next election to them. So ask yourself the question, when Trump behaves like a jerk, is there one person anywhere who didn’t vote for him last time who says, ‘You know I didn’t vote for him last time, but now that I see what a tremendous jerk he is, sign me up’? No, of course not. He pleases his base with jerkiness, but he doesn’t expand his base and he’s going to need to expand it in order to win. We need him to win, because as big a jerk as Trump his, he’s an amateur compared to the opposition.” —Andrew Klavan

The BIG Lie: “There has never been a president in American history who has been so openly racist and divisive as this man.” —Joe Biden

Alpha Jackass: “[Trump] has joined Andrew Johnson as the most racist president in American history.” —presidential historian Jon Meacham

Braying Jenny: “Every single member of this institution, Democratic and Republican, should join us in condemning the President’s racist tweets. To do anything less would be a shocking rejection of our values and a shameful abdication of our oath of office to protect the American people.” —House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Food for thought: “Roman Empire: ‘You Christians are too exclusive. You threaten the social order because you won’t honor all deities.’ Modern West: ‘You Christians are too exclusive. You threaten the social order because you won’t honor all identities.’” —Tim Keller

And last… “The president of Planned Parenthood, a minority woman, was forced out of her job because she wouldn’t affirm the insane doctrine that men can have babies. The Left is so anti-science that even minority women can lose their jobs for believing in science. Remarkable.” —Matt Walsh
