Praise, wee — CBS‘ broadcast of the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards delivered all-time lows.
The Stephen Colbert-hosted ceremony drew 11.38 million total viewers and a 2.5 rating (per finals), matching last year’s all-time smallest audience while slipping 11 percent in the demo to a new low.
Sunday night’s telecast showed much love to Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale (the first streaming series to be named best drama) and HBO’s Big Little Lies, while Colbert’s opening number/monologue earned an average grade of “B+” from TVLine readers. Network-by-network, HBO netted 29 total Emmys, followed by Netflix (20), NBC (15), Hulu (10) and ABC (7). Emmys host CBS picked up four, all at the previous weekend’s Creative Arts ceremony.
Providing stiff competition for TV’s starriest night, NBC Sunday Night Football‘s Packers/Falcons match-up drew 20.2 million total viewers and a 7.1 rating, down 17 and 22 percent from last week.
Over on Fox, The Orville with its second and final Sunday showcase did 6.6 mil and a 2.2 in finals, down 23 and 29 percent from its solid launch; next stop, Thursdays at 9! ABC’s Funderdome (3 mil/0.6) and Pyramid (2.9 mil/0.5) slipped to season lows.

This is the first time I’ve watched the Emmy’s in YEARS..HAHAHA..Oh well.
Karma is a bitch!!
Karma from what?
Steve Colbert told the Trump supporters not to bother watching and there 63 million of those. When you ask that many people not to watch, it’s bound to hurt the ratings.
Yup
Karma for who for what? Certainly not the incredible Colbert.
Not surprised. It’s time to do away with these awards shows for TV. There are so many WONDERFUL programs, there is no way you can pick a handful and say these are the best of the best. Plus, people don’t want to be preached to about politics. They watch tv to be entertained.
Do you think critics should stop doing year end top 10 lists too?
That would save us so much time here at the quarry…..
When push comes to shove, it’s all a personal choice or option as to what you watch or like. I prefer not to listen to critics and form my own opinions. Different strokes for different folks!
Do you think critics should just stop? ;-)
Very true….that is why I didn’t watch it last night….I could care less what these actors and actresses have to say politically!
You *could not* care less. “Could care less…” means you do care.
And then there are the grammar police.
Grammar police or someone pointing out that Sue didn’t actually type what she thought she did?
I loved the emmy’s and thought it was very
entertaining. Thank u, everyone, who helped me, my friends and family tune out 45 and his fixed news sponsor during this really horrible first year of ugliness. Television has triumphed and will just keep getting better. Here’s to another year of plots and stories that will keep us more entertained than the bozo in the wh.
You are delusional and live in a liberal bubble.
Enjoy!
No, you are the delusional one who would follow Drumpf’s instructions to drink poisonous Kool-Aid if he told you to…
Well you seem to have drank Hillary’s crazy sauce.
Hello! RickJames and your crazy conservative comments, I look forward to them every time you pop up. Your anti-Hilary point of view is well known but isn’t it time to move on? Hilary is not going to seek public office again so you might have to find someone else to rant against and are you still blaming Obama for all of America’s problems? and/or liberals in general? How long will that continue? For the next 10 years or so? Time to move on…
Also, how long will it be before you turn on Trump? Haven’t you realized by now that Trump is the real crazy one? You elected a former reality TV star!!! and finally have you burned your “Make America Great Again” red hat yet for supporting democrats?
Oh boy is this great!!!
Rick James, youre so ignorant ,you probably think there is such thing as “fake news”. You must have rocks in the place where your brain should be! By the way America has always been great, because of its diversity!
The People told Trump what they wanted, Make America Great Again” Border Security nd Wall, Repeal Obummer horrible uNafformdable Health Care, Tax Reform, Stop Third World Alien invasion, No aliens from Terrorist countries bring their Sharia laws and backwards oppressive culture.
So the only options are to oppose absolutely everything Trump says and does, or to follow him like a puppy and drink the kool aid? Those are the only types of people in this country?
Only an assat would say that.
Really?? You are the brain washed cnn watching complete idiots that would rather hope the potus u hate fails, than see him succeed and help out country. That’s how spiteful you people are. SAD
Yes. Living in a bubble. Hollywood lives in a bubble. And America is giving them a message loud and clear. Quit with your politics. Hillary lost. Boo hoo. They are all rich elitists. It’s a joke. If Trump was such a fascist? The Emmy’s would not have been broadcast. And Korea has been a threat since Clinton. Where he these idiots been? And who made the deal with Iran? Not Trump. Give me a break already. They hate what America stands for? Let them either move to Cuba or give up their million dollar salaries and move to the valley!!!
Uhh…the North Koreans have been a threat since the 1950s.
Yes America is giving everyone a message, but the minions obviously don’t comprehend it. 33% approval rating doesn’t speak for all of AMERICA. Obviously it is the 33% who hates what America stands for.
You’re referring to the same polls that said Hillary would win by a landslide…how’d that work out?
BTW if you really believe those polls then they show whiny Hillary is viewed even worse by the public at this point. No matter what you think of Trump he’s still better than Hillary.
Typical cult member, when you can’t defend him insert Hillary.
“Typical cult member, when you can’t defend him insert Hillary.” Oh Mary, please. Didn’t we hear nearly 8 years of “Blame Bush” throughout the last administration? As an independent who hated all our choices this past election, the way either side has this gross inability to see the faults of their “rival” mirrored back on them is pretty..well I’m not sure if it’s sick or amusing.
DELETED
That is laughable considering she lost as many of you have pointed out. She never held the office so keep pointing her out is ignorant at best. Yes Bernie’s supporters are upset because she wrote a book and refuses to hide herself away. I know her faults, but the truth is the majority of the conspiracy BS are nothing more than that. Wow thanks for pointing out your insecurities for a strong independent Women.
Polls are wrong! I think we can all agree on that!! 33% my ass!
Hollywood lives in a bubble. And America is giving them a message loud and clear. Quit with your politics.
.
And yet many of the same people giving Hollywood that message thought it was a good idea to vote for a reality TV show star to become president, so I’m sorry, what was that about how celebrities should stay out of politics again?
.
Also, considering Trump’s approval rating is in the low 30s, I would be careful about claiming that America at large is tired of the Trump criticism.
.
Hillary lost. Boo hoo.
.
Funny, I could say the same thing to the Trump supporters who seem determined to bring her up at every turn. I think only one of the speeches last night gave a shoutout to Hillary, so it wasn’t exactly like it was a Hillary lovefest there.
.
They are all rich elitists.
.
And Trump isn’t?
.
It’s a joke.
.
So is Trump.
That “reality TV show star” has much more in common with those who supported him than you understand. You clearly show your ignorance because you ignore the fact that was a very successful businessman and entrepreneur first, who built a business from the ground up and who regularly interacts with Americans who are definitely not rice elitists. And you’re also ignorant about Trump supporters bringing up that woman. Most of us just want her to fade quietly away, but she continues to inflict her immature whining and delusions on us. I’m ignoring her as much as possible.
Uh, who’s the biggest rich elitist here? Donald j trump
I love how people think only liberals can’t stand Trump. You know there are Republicans out there who are equally disgusted with him, too, right, and hate what he’s doing to their party?
.
Also, many of us liberals know many Trump supporters. We’re either related to them or work with them, and have tried to have conversations with them. We’re more than well aware of why people voted for Trump. Just because we don’t agree with them doesn’t mean we don’t “get it”.
The latest poll results say 72% think the Emmys shouldn’t be so political.
Then along comes Carol …
The question asked people to pick their theory on why people didn’t watch. That number isn’t a reflection of people’s personal feelings but why they think the Emmys were at an all time low. I picked that option and I watched and enjoyed the Emmys.
Huh. Well, I’m not a fan of the Pres, but I don’t need TV consistently bashing him and everyone that may agree with even an smidgen of an idea that comes from his party to help me get through the ugliness. What does help me get through the ugliness is a) not being ugly myself. Just because I don’t like someone doesn’t mean I need to bash and ridicule. b) getting out and doing something to make the world a better place even if it means starting with my own neighborhood food pantry. and c) spending time with the things that do make me happy. try it. It works wonders.
You probably enjoyed the hate fest. You should seek professional help.
People are some damned tired of it being politicized that could give a crap less
rating were low ,because of that boring prick Colbert!
Hollywood is so out of touch!!!!!
Ironic you say that, then maybe people should stop electing them, since many of you are under the impression they don’t have a voice. Truth be told many are more educated in politics then the average citizen, that says a lot.
They are more educated about politics? What leads you to that conclusion? Just because they have a bully pulpit, doesn’t make them better educated on the subject. Just because they may agree or disagree with you or me or whoever, doesn’t make them better educated on the subject. I don’t care that some actor or director or writer or whatever has a camera to share their 2 cts in front of. I DO, however, tire of hearing them share it in a manner that mocks those that disagree with their view point. I do tire of hearing folks on either side act like they have the right to condemn the intellect and worth of others because they disagree. It’s really quite banal, and frankly vexatious.
👍
Maybe because they can give an intelligent inform response about Government, when many average citizens are clueless when asked a simple question. That is on both sides. One can only feel unworthy or non intellect when they don’t comprehend what one is saying. See like I said an intelligent average citizen do their own research and don’t look to them for the answers. You are right, both sides have been attacking the other but that is not due to these celebrities but the clueless wonder in office. A true leader would at least try to unite both sides and not play just to his base. That is to me is quite banal, and frankly vexatious.
Both sides have been condemning the other long before 45 was elected. I actually think that is why we have a President Trump. Nobody on either side feels like they can work with the other side to compromise on the common good of our nation. It has been like this I think since President Clinton’s second term. For some reason our nation – from our leaders to our entertainers to our neighbors- are in a constant battle of “I’m right, so you are wrong, and you are stupid.” No politician can even campaign on the idea of compromise and working with both parties to try to come up with a common ground solution. If they do, their “base” calls them a RINO or DINO, and refuses to vote for them. So what did that get us? Two of the least liked nominees for President in history. So I wouldn’t blame 45 for the mess we are in. I would blame ourselves to cause the 45 mess in the first place. I LONG for leaders to come up with one issue that they work together to come up with a solution. One that is not tied to 15 other issues. Just one- and see if they can get one thing done TOGETHER. It is up to both parties now. One party is not better than the other.
Mary, attacking either side goes back much farther than 45’s first days in office or even his campaign. It goes back father than JD suggests in his reply. Try reading up on campaigns, for example, like the 3rd Presidential campaign (the 1st and 2nd hardly being a race and more of going through the motions to ‘elect’ Washington. Try reading up on the race (and subsequent terms of) John Quincy Adams & Jackson. Read — well I could give a long list. Point is, this nonsense is as old as politics itself. To suggest otherwise calls into question your ‘intelligent inform response about Government” argument. To your original point, however, you seem to make a lot of assumptions. Did it occur to you that “the average” citizen that seems unable to provide a seemingly informed response to a simple question is a person on the street selected for a segment that runs on whatever program you’re watching? That they are an interviewed subject that made the final draft of the news segment or article because they fit the angle of the story? That those were actually ARE informed and aware weren’t included in the final edit? As a former journalist, I have respect for the job those folks do – but I also know that when you have seconds to convey your story or column inch (or word count, page count) to get your point across….somethings get in and some things get left out. If you’re making your assumptions based on such content, you’re getting a snippet of reality. If you’re making your judgement based on people you speak with in real life – well, someone that doesn’t agree with you isn’t necessarily ill-informed…they just reached a different conclusion (and they may consider you to be the ignorant one.)
“You are right, both sides have been attacking the other but that is not due to these celebrities but the clueless wonder in office.”
Mary, the irony contained in that sentence is truly mind-boggling.
Barack Obama trashed Republicans all day every day.
Ok, I’m just scrolling down looking for comments about tv programs and am lost just saying
Actually, they are very under-educated when it comes to politics.
Usually they participate in volunteer groups and political groups, not sought out by themselves, but by their agents.
They mostly have friends who do the same, are rich, have friends that are rich, and maybe only talk to a handful of indigenous people when they travel. The rest of us talk to the normal working class with no rich filter. We understand that there are many spheres of political groups out there. When we travel, we actually hang out with locals and hear the rhetoric from their local politicians and, know their lives, and hear their arguments (the good and bad) and sometimes even argue over their logic as they do with ours (we aren’t afraid of bad publicity). We have friearends that are struggling with taxes, rent payments, mortgage payments and scarcity of jobs.
The people that are least qualified to talk about politics are actors.
they are more educated about politics? are you serious? they live in their expensive mansions, wear expensive clothes and jewelry, go on vacation to expensive locations…. they are completely out out of touch with the real world and ordinary people’s hardships. pro-refugee/immigrant george clooney moved back to the us from italy because it was not safe there anymore. and i’m not american, i’m from the balkans and god knows how many people have passed through that route, possibly around million; i’ve seen what those people have gone through. hollywood is doing nothing to help the situation, the only thing they know is how to talk.
i’m glad ratings were at all-time low.
Amen….a bunch of overpaid narcissists
Mr. Matt, hopefully your “advice” would also apply to those on the other side of this debate who’s postings near hysteria?
Look who was elected, a TV reality man who lives in a tacky gold penthouse. People elected a OUT OF TOUCH clueless one who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. I guess the irony of all the attacks of what I said is lost on many or you. “We are all born ignorant, but one must work real hard to remain stupid”. You obviously have internet, maybe you should educate yourself on what humanitarian works Mr. Clooney and other celebrities have been involved in, then get back to me with an intelligent response.
Zzzzzzzzzz
Mary, before Trump was a reality TV star he was a world renown business man, you think they just grabbed a used car salesman off the street and got him to host the apprentice? It is like you are 10 years old trying to have a conversation with adults. Seriously hide your hate and research the “other side” from different sources that don’t hate the other side. wow… democrats hadn’t been this mad since we freed the slaves
Oh look the pesky fly is back. Good thing Fall is almost here and the bugs will be gone.
Yes Chris he was a well known business man known for screwing his contractors and many failed businesses. Hardly a glowing recommendation for the average person. Like I said intelligent people do research and don’t look to celebrities for the answers. He might as well have been a used car salesmen because his ignorance of our laws, Constitution, and how the Government is suppose to be run – independent branches – you know check and balances is totally lost on him. It is not hatred but simple common sense. It is like asking a Wendy’s worker perform surgery on you – both are ill prepared or educated for the position.
Bugs may come and go with the seasons but bats in your belfry are forever. BTW the Hilda Beast was in a CT COSTCO yesterday, shilling her book and from the look of her, eating all the free samples she could find.
Yes do more research, he’s had nearly 600 businesses and like 5 failed. I challenge you to show me another business man with a track record that good. Having a lawsuit again him by a contractor doesn’t mean he is known for screwing contractors lol, over his life he has paid hundreds of thousands of contractors and the idiotic democratic party finds one that didn’t go well and applies a label. Can’t you understand that is why the democratic party puts labels on everyone, to keep them separated and easily controlled. Anyways, you are full of hate a vitriol and I don’t expect to change your slanted views, probably not even a real person just a dnc operative doing what you do best. Spout low info talking points that make no sense.
so what? he earned that money, he can buy whatever he wants. “daddy gave him that money” and? many children get money from their parents and end up bankrupt.
i’m amazed by people who still don’t get why trump was elected; they voted against hillary and everything she represents; her focus on identity politics and other irrelevant issues ordinary people couldn’t care less about because they have more important things on their mind, like how to pay their bills and survive. they literally chose a clueless person over her! maybe it’s time to learn something from it. and after all this time she still hasn’t acknowledged she was a bad candidate and the only one to blame for her failure; no, everybody was at fault but her.
i cannot believe that you, a person who lives across the pond, and gets all her information from media (obviously from cnn) is explaining me how things work. come here, and ask them herself about their treatment; asked them how hard they have been beaten and how long have they slept out in the open on -15 celsius. listen to your advice and use the internet herself to search about how they were thankful to us for not beating them (and you will easily find which country i’m from).
celebrities only talk about this issue for their promo/publicity. they do a video here and there and carry on with their rich lives. they don’t care really about everyday issues because they aren’t part of their lives. taking advice from celebrities is ridiculous and i’m glad people have figured that out.
and stop being so arrogant.
Mark Cuban, Buffet, Gates to name a few, you know the self made type not one handed to by Daddy. More than one law suit and no I am not a paid DNC worker just stating facts. Those facts might not make sense to you because obviously you refuse to do the actual research, but they are real.
@Ksenija obviously you felt the need to bring Clinton into this but the truth is over 50% of voters never showed up because they hated both candidates. He won the electoral, but truth is the majority of who did voted picked her. Considering you don’t live in America you really have no say and maybe you should worry about where you are from. There are many Celebrities who have done far more than #45 but that is not even the point I was making. Ironic you are defending someone who wouldn’t help your Country out if he didn’t make a profit off it unless you are a paid troll.
@RickJames You are receiving this message because you posted in defense of Donald Trump.
I no longer provide individual responses on this matter. It has been my experience that Trump supporters are universally incapable of accepting verifiable truths about him and, by extension, themselves, thus rendering discussion pointless and, therefore, a waste of time.
I wish you all the best in your ongoing battle with reality.
Yours respectfully, a logical person.
@mary
when did i defend trump? i couldn’t care less about who won, foreign policy would have stayed the same except hillary would do everything with rainbow stickers on herself. i’m writing about hypocrisy of hollywood and why people don’t take them seriously anymore, and why your citizens chose clueless trump over hillary. ‘popular vote’, ugh. not everyone can live in the east and the west and but by your standards they are the only one who should have a say, who cares about other parts of your country, they are irrelevant. move on already, it’s almost been a year.
and btw, i’m not asking anybody to help my country, i’m asking from ‘celebrities who care and are politically well educated’ to stop talking and actually do something of importance.
DELETED
I am going to “advise” that you dial down the personal attacks, RickJames. Argue points, not people. Thank you. –Mgmt.
They live in a make believe world and only believe what they are told by fake news and their liberal leaders. They live their life being someone else and think the public cares about what they say. Just read the scripts and do what you do best..ENTERTAIN.
I think you are confusing educated with opinionated.
Electing them? Electing them to what? I think you are confusing educated with opinionated.
Electing them to Congress, Mayor, and the highest office. Gee people Reagan ring a bell. It is ignorant to think that “Celebrities” aren’t informed citizens. You might not agree with their opinion, but that is your problem.
Reagan, Schwartzenegger, Franken, Trump. Just a few examples of celebrities who’ve all actually been elected to some sort of political office and supported by the public. And now with Kid Rock running for political office, I won’t be the least bit surprised to see people voting for him, too.
.
But yeah. Celebrities should totally not share their political views, ’cause who listens to them anyway, right?
you forgot Jesse Ventura, the wrestler. I think he was a governor of Minnesota or Michigan?
Actually a large number of celebs are poorly versed in politics. They just spew what they’re told so they don’t get blacklisted.
With what?
They just think that their opinions are the only ones that matter
Agreed.
Yep. And they’re so tolerant that they allow conversation with opposing viewpoints. 😂
Oh do you mean like many who post on these sites? Only difference is they have a platform and many of you don’t.
Why yes Mary, they are people just like you–thinking NO ONE else has the correct answer except themselves–and being so odious and superior in the process. Funny, I bet if any of the celebrities came forth with an opinion that differed from yours–you’d be front and center with your torch and matches. Guess it’s all in the perspective of things–oh wait, there’s only one perspective–yours. Funny how the ratings continue to sink–guess the TV audiences are showing their perspectives as well…
They have been going down yearly and it doesn’t have much to do about politics. Never said I had all the correct answers but I don’t attack Celebrities for expressing theirs and thinking they have no right. Ironic choice of words, torch and matches. I guess that says a lot about you.
Sigh. Mary, of course celebs have the right to an opinion and a right to express it. Just as we commoners have the right not to watch their program if we choose not to hear them share it.
@ SU — (I always envision her with knitting needles.)
No Mary–“torch and matches” says it more about you–I was referring to Young Frankenstein–just what the Hell were you referring to? I bet I can guess–and it does paint a very telling picture of where your mind dwells. You attack anyone who doesn’t fall in step with what you say–your numerous remarks show that. However, @Morisot, I’m beginning to see those same knitting needles….wow.
Says the intolerant one from the other direction…
Amazing how we are called intolerant and snowflakes and yet your side don’t see the irony of it. Maybe self reflecting is needed on your part.
Your side is the only side trying to shut down free speech by trying to block speakers at college campuses
Racist Nazi shouldn’t be given a platform period. A TRUE Patriot American would comprehend that. Actually you are incorrect again, considering the mouth piece Huckabee wanted someone fired for what she tweeted.
Mary, I wasn’t aware there were Jewish “racist nazis”. That’s how deluded you and the left are. You’re calling Jews “racist nazis”. That’s who they your violent Antifa buddies tried to stop from speaking recently at Berkley. Your should really get informed with facts if you want argue and not sound like a total crazy person.
I may have forgotten to add a comma but I see you understood my point perfectly. No I don’t condone violence of any kind but sorry you can’t equate the KKK to the Antifa. Yes please educate yourself on the matter.
…so in other words, they’re like every other person out there who spouts their political views, then.
.
Wow. Shocking revelation, that.
I regret staying up to watch the show. I found it boring, especially because it featured too many non-broadcast shows that I didn’t see. Colbert was ok but the material he was given wasn’t entertaining. Was very happy to see Sterling Brown get his well-deserved win but was disappointed that This is Us didn’t get more awards.
IMHO Colbert was wonderful. That other guy announcing was useless. And a lot of viewers do not subscribe to premium channels or streaming services, so many of us have never seen so many of those nominated shows. Also, there are too many truly outstanding shows to pick just one out of too few nominees given the quality of these programs. Regular and premium shows should be separate so more viewers would care.
This is the first time in year I missed the Emmys. I was out and when I got back I totally forgot it was on.
The politics are the least of this show’s problems. There is an over abundance of quality shows and actors and to single out one out a myriad amount is simply unfair. I’m a big The Americans fan and I loved The Handmaids Tale. How in the name of fairness can you put Keri Russell against Elizabeth Moss? I love Veep but how in hell does Julie Louis- Dreyfus win every damned year? Why wasn’t Michael McKean not nominated for Better Call Saul?
My point: Emmys are overlooking performances that are equal if not better than the people who win. Ergo, I don’t watch. It’s next to meaningless.
Did not watch due to knowing that instead of these multi-millionaires talking about their craft they went up there and bashed half the country! We need to remember they are no better then the middle class of America who get up every morning and go to work. We don’t have a soap box to stand on. They do not know more then the rest of us they live behind gated communities with guards.
36% of the country, last time I looked. Massive buyer’s remorse with your guy.
yes, all the polls were accurate that predicted a hilary win as well?
She DID win in a landslide! I believe it was slightly over 3 MILLION more votes. They were just disbursed in Trump’s favor.
this is America, Trump won in a landslide with over 300 electoral votes. Trump won over 30 states, election wasn’t close
And how many of those 3 million voters did not live in California or New York? We have the electoral college precisely because we can’t have two out of 48 states deciding the election by popular vote. Americans in other states matter too!
The same polls that said Hillary would win in a landslide?
I didn’t watch knowing how they would try to disgrace our President. I’m so glad there are many people like me, that feel the same. TV and Hollywood need to get a life.
Agreed! I feel exactly the same way. Had zero interest in watching.
In case you didn’t notice, the guy you voted for IS A TV STAR. You all mock “Hollywood” for being rich, out-of-touch elites, when that’s EXACTLY what you voted for. Trump doesn’t give a crap about “people like you.” He’s proving that every single day.
Save your breath…they’ll never understand this basic concept.
No he’s a business man who happened to be on a reality TV for a while. In the list of his life accomplishments, reality TV is way down the list. Can you say the same about 99% of other TV stars? Nope.
The truth is many of you would never have heard of him if he didn’t have that TV reality show. Want to talk about business man, look at his record screwing people over, and bankruptcy when his business ventures failed. Look at the law suits he had past and present. Rick you are a perfect example of this quote. “Trump is a poor man’s idea of a rich man, a dumb man’s idea of a smart man, and a weak man’s idea of a strong man.”
The truth is he was well known before he did that reality show. He started with what? A million dollars he father fronted him. What’s he worth now? Mic drop!!! Mary you are a perfect example of this quote “stupid is as stupid does”
The $1 million loan doesn’t include any of the benefits Trump received from his family’s connections and joining his father’s real estate business after he graduated from college, and it doesn’t count an estimated $40 million inheritance in 1974. The $10 billion figure, which is what Trump claims as his current net worth, is also disputed. Bloomberg News has estimated Trump’s net worth at only $2.9 billion, while Forbes put it at $4.1 billion. Since Trump’s businesses aren’t public, the true figure isn’t clear.
The Wollman Rink was a sorry hole-in-the-ground in the southwest corner of NYC’s Central Park. The municipality had closed it and sunk millions of dollars refurbishing it — only to realize that there were “problems” with all the work that had been done ( and, without re-opening it) decided that they were going to have to rip it out and start over again! Donald Trump objected to the waste and mismanagement and proposed that he could make the Wollman Rink a jewel for the city. There was resistance, but NYC finally let Trump take over the project. He brought it in under budget and earlier than the deadline the city had set. It turned into a big part of the re-vitalization of Central Park. His projects in NYC have beautified the city; helped tourism; created jobs.
Your president is the one who disgraces your president.
Ha ha ha….they disgrace our president. Au contraire. The Donald disgraces us and our country nearly every single day.
Lol your “POTUS” makes a fool of himself just fine, he doesn’t need Hollywood for that. DT disgraces & exposes his weak & fragile ego every single day to the rest of the world. He’s a moron!
TOO MANY “STARS” DO NOTHING BUT PUT DOWN OUR PRESIDENT, I WON’T GIVE THEM THE TIME OF DAY
Stop YELLING!
If these “stars” would give him the time of day, he’d drop the likes of you in a hot second.
If he wasn’t a terrible human being maybe people wouldn’t put him down?
As people change the way the consume television and the number of subscription only channels that hit the “airwaves” increases, the Emmy’s will likely struggle to capture an audience. I don’t subscribe to Hulu so as much as I’ve read/heard the hubbub surrounding The Handmaid’s Tail, I haven’t seen it. I have no vested interest in whether it wins or not. Others have gone with Hulu but not NetFlix Some don’t have HBO. This isn’t the movies – I can’t pick and chose what program I want to pay for. I either subscribe for a channel or I can’t access it. it limits the audience that cares when those shows are in the running – and yet those shows may very well deserve to be in the running. Point is, either way, when only some of your viewing public is even familiar with nominees, you’re going to have a hard time getting them to tune in. Beyond that, I think folks are tired of politics filling time in these shows. I watch TV to escape and unwind. No desire to listen to Hollywood drone on some more. And frankly, I find it hard to connect with or care much about an entire program dedicated to folks congratulating themselves for entertaining us. I mean let’s get real, as wonderful a job some programs do in sparking conversation, I’ve yet to see one show make early the earth shattering difference they act like it does when they go about these productions. That’s not new – but I do think folks are tiring of it. we have too many other choices of things to watch to be spend time watching Hollywood kiss-up to itself.
Sure you can pick and chose what you want to watch (or at least most of it) because viewers don’t have to subscribe to Netflix for an entire year (or Hulu or HBO Now). There is nothing stopping viewers from subscribing to Netflix for 3 months and watching what you want , than HBO Now for 2 months, and than Hulu for 1 month, than Starz for a month if they like Outlander for example.
Maybe it’s my age showing, but do people really do that, John? For me, personally, committing to a movie ticket is a single, afternoon for a couple of hours. Committing to a series on a subscription service starts to become me, remembering when I signed up and when I have to ‘unsub’ before I get billed again and it starts to become a hassle that’s just not worth it. It’s why I end up with amazon prime for a year and why I went 30 days past my “free trial” on netflix last year. (ha!) Maybe if I had a lot of stuff I wanted to watch, I’d do a three month stint and binge it all. Just one program, however, seems like more work than it’s worth. I’m sure some folks do it. I’m sure a lot of folks do it. I just think a lot more won’t even bother. I’m just a GenX’er with two teens, a full time job, and chaotic schedule of extras between the four of us in the family. Keeping tabs of add-ons so I can cancel NF when I’m done with Stranger Things is a pain in the rear. I’d rather just pick a streaming service that has more of what I want, and watch it…or not.
Not interested in political bull…. that came from the host and some of the presenters. I would have watched if it was just about TV shows, good, bad and otherwise but the politics were a big turnoff for m.
All awards shows are seeing ratings fall. It’s simple math – the more options on TV (which was celebrated last night), the more spread out the numbers will be. Look at the NFL – their ratings have been consistently falling the last few years as well, for a number of reasons, including scores and highlights being readily available across non-rated platforms. The ratings slide (in purely overnight numbers) for the Emmys is not a reflection on Colbert, it’s simply a sign of the times.
Plus now you can wait for the highlights the next day or catch clips on YouTube. You don’t miss anything anymore. In the past you couldn’t see production numbers or opening monologues over and over again so you had to tuned in. Now it’s a click away on the internet. You missed the funny joke, don’t worry, it will be played over and over again the next day.
I think all three of the reasons given above contribute to a lower and lower trend for the Emmy awards.
Colbert does not speak for a large part of the US. He speaks for the far liberal left.
A lot of “celebrities” feel that they have to make a political stand if they want to continue to get good roles and parts in shows.
And it is true that many. . .if not most. . . hardly ever watch most of these cable streaming and premium channel shows that Hollywood goes ape sh!t over.
The Emmys and Oscars awards given out each year generally reflect some type of political view that Hollywood and New York want to emphasize in any given year.
This will always maintain the hard left but is losing most everyone else.
On the contrary, Colbert speaks for millions upon millions of people who are disgusted by Trump & his supporters, not just the “far liberal left.”
Ratings for September 4-8 indicated 2.89 million viewers. That’s not even 1% of the US population. Even accounting for, let’s say, 25% of the population being under 18 that still puts him under 2% of the adult population. So no, he doesn’t speak for America.
Politics has NO place in Hollywood Award Shows. Stick to what is relevant to the Show. It is definitely not necessary or wanted to trash our current President or any American President on
National TV! What must the world think of us???
They think, no, they KNOW that this country has gone to the toilet by having this racist pig as president.
Yes. As someone from the rest of the world, I can confirm that you are indeed right. Our opinion of you has diminished because of who you elected, not because of how your actors & actresses respond to him.
I’m just so thankful that my tv has many different channels + Netflix + a DVR and it’s on the same night as SNF, I have lots of options other than this awards show!
I think it’s because the highly anticipated Vietnam by Ken Burns premiered at the same time, and also Sunday night football. Everybody I knew was watching Vietnam.
Imagine my surprise! NOBODY CARES about your stupid politics. THIS is why Hollyweird is dying on the vine.
I really think they are going to have to expand the categories to separate streaming from network and cable or you’re gonna have to have separate award shows for each.. there were barely any network shows and even though streaming is blowing up network still gather the most viewers when all networks are added all together… so I see why many wouldn’t watch… why would they when none of their shows were nominated,…
The problem with the Emmy Awards, and other award shows is that unless you follow a very specific type of TV show, you will probably never have a horse in the race. Even before the explosion of streaming services and quality cable shows, there were network shows that were great, but which the award voters wouldn’t even bother to watch.
So, why watch? At best, you might get some entertainment from a group of people who make a living off of being entertaining. They’ll either look pretty, or look ridiculous, and maybe put on a fun show. Except, it stopped being fun. Now you spend hours being lectured to about politics and scientific philosophy by people who not only don’t know what they’re talking about most of the time, but who have absolutely no interest in an actual conversation. They just want to preach without question.
The shows aren’t entertaining. They’re not fun. 99.99% of the time, they don’t honor any show that is worth honoring (Big Little Lies was the most predictable show I’ve seen in a while, and The Handmaid’s Tale had some horrible world building work, but is getting honored because the press people are trying to connect it to Trump… which makes no sense, but whatever).
Actors, like every citizen have a right to their opinions and the right to free speech, and I’m not a huge Trump fan, but I’m just tired of it. I’m tired of lectures and half-truths coming from every angle, with no mature conversation or respect for differing opinions. I watch these shows to escape actual news and to be entertained. When they fail to do that, why watch?
authorkyle; enjoyed your response; it seems we are not the minority on this “forum”; and good books speak volumns; gets my vote anytime. Ah, another comment; as a Vince Flynn (Mitch Rapp in particular) fan, just the previews for “American Assassin” make me vomit; this little wimpy looking lead may be good in the film, but i’ll never know cuz it looks like really bad casting; just like Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher in Lee Childs’ books. Just my not so humble opinion. Thank you.
Agree on every point. Even if you are a person who is more liberal than the average celebrity, is this even what you want to see when watching an awards show? Political banter and rhetoric from a group of people who are being honored with a gold trophy for the arts? I used to look forward to awards shows because it was a celebration and a good time, but now it is just tiring and more of the same and I don’t understand how any celebrity, no matter what your political view is, would rather spend their 30 seconds denouncing the president or half of the country or spewing negativity in any fashion instead of enjoying the moment and allowing us as viewers to appreciate what they do and how they got there for the sole purpose of the award: they ACT, not lecture, not campaign for political ideologies. It’s so frustrating and the worst part is they think they are doing good, preaching the “right” message, when it so obviously is helping further divide American’s on how they interact and relate to one another due to a difference in political and social opinions.
Great point. I know a lot of people who have a lot of different opinions, and when we’re hanging around each other, it’s not good vs evil, us vs them. I’m so sick of this notion that political differences make us enemies. We are not at war with each other, but it seems like some people really wish that we were. A healthy adult can approach a political discussion without assuming that the other person is actively wishing to be evil, and it’s not helping to make anyone’s case when you get on stage and badmouth and belittle anyone who disagrees with you. It would be one thing if they made little jokes, all in good fun. But it’s not in good fun. It is meant as an attack, and they feel like warriors when they do it. They are so isolated in a community where 99.9% of the people think the same way they do that they can’t even grasp the notion of anything else.
To those of us who live in a world with actual diversity, they look like fools.
I tried to watch it for about 5 minutes and then turned it off. When the whole thing is going to be politicized, I don’t bother. I guess this is Hollywood’s version of complaining and giving excuses why their voice didn’t matter in the election. But I’m not sure they realize, that it still doesn’t matter. These guys are so isolated from reality and obtuse its amazing. I know they are actors but I didn’t think they could act so amazingly stupid.
